Taylor Swift<\/a> has bought back her master recordings. She made the announcement with a note<\/a> on her website<\/a>, sharing happily, \u201cAll of the music I\u2019ve ever made\u2026 now belongs\u2026 to me.\u201d It\u2019s the first time she has every owned the rights to all of her own music. Infamously, in 2019, Scooter Braun\u2019s media holding company, Ithaca Holdings LLC, acquired<\/a> Big Machine Label Group. With that acquisition came the rights to Swift\u2019s first six studio albums. Swift denounced the acquisition and criticized Braun and his \u201cbullying.\u201d She also said, \u201cScooter has stripped me of my life\u2019s work, that I wasn\u2019t given an opportunity to buy. Essentially, my musical legacy is about to lie in the hands of someone who tried to dismantle it.\u201d (In a new statement, regarding Swift\u2019s acquisition of her masters, Braun said, \u201cI am happy for her.\u201d)<\/p>\n

Following the acquisition, Swift\u2014who left<\/a> Big Machine Label Group in 2018 to sign a deal with Universal Music Group\u2014pledged<\/a> to re-record her albums so that she could own the new master recordings. She made it two-thirds of the way through, releasing new editions of Fearless<\/a>, Red<\/a>, Speak Now<\/a>, and 1989<\/a>. According to her announcement, she finished the new version of her self-titled debut<\/a>, but is not yet sure when it could be released. She also said she did not yet finish re-recording Reputation<\/a>\u2014a re-recorded album that was widely expected to come out soon due to her previewing of \u201cLook What You Made Me Do (Taylor\u2019s Version)<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before Swift released any of her Taylor\u2019s Version albums, however, Braun and his company sold<\/a> the musician\u2019s masters to the Los Angeles investment firm Shamrock Capitol. At the time of the acquisition, Shamrock said, \u201cTaylor Swift is a transcendent artist with a timeless catalog. We made this investment because we believe in the immense value and opportunity that comes with her work.\u201d<\/p>\n

In her statement today, Swift thanked \u201ceveryone at Shamrock Capital for being the first people to ever offer this to me. The way they\u2019ve handled every interaction we\u2019ve had has been honest, fair, and respectful.\u201d<\/p>\n
