You may experience a rare side effect, FDA warns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TULHBU35XBF3FGE5SAWHAMDO5A\">Long-term use of several common allergy medications could lead to severe itching in rare cases, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/drug-safety-and-availability\/fda-requires-warning-about-rare-severe-itching-after-stopping-long-term-use-oral-allergy-medicines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/drug-safety-and-availability\/fda-requires-warning-about-rare-severe-itching-after-stopping-long-term-use-oral-allergy-medicines\">U.S. Food and Drug Administration warns. <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7EQZSVOT2BBOJLYP24IRGYE5FQ\">The itching is called \u201cpruritus,\u201d and it can be caused by over the counter or prescription forms of Zyrtec (cetirizine) or Xyzal (levocetirizine), both antihistamines that treat seasonal allergies. It typically occurs within a few days of stopping the medications, the FDA said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"I443DFDFFFAG3PP52AMK3JO5HU\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/news\/2025\/05\/cucumber-recall-expanded-by-fda-after-salmonella-outbreak-in-15-states-including-alabama.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/news\/2025\/05\/cucumber-recall-expanded-by-fda-after-salmonella-outbreak-in-15-states-including-alabama.html\"><b>READ MORE: Cucumber recall expanded by FDA after salmonella outbreak in 15 states, including Alabama<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RBZ26LDXXREZNJR5DZOPMPEKIA\">People who take the oral medications every day for months or years may be susceptible to the condition in exceptional cases, the administration stated in an alert this month. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7JN23K6LINDLXPQN4DY7RVJK3M\">\u201cReported cases were rare but sometimes serious, with patients experiencing widespread, severe itching that required medical intervention,\u201d the administration said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5M3CO4IB3BED7JI7IBGAYGWMTA\">The FDA reported finding 209 cases worldwide, between 2017 and 2023, in people who stopped using the two medications. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WOTNGZ4GLRGZTIENQEMM4J7UU4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/news\/2025\/05\/covid-vaccine-change-shots-no-longer-recommended-for-2-groups.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/news\/2025\/05\/covid-vaccine-change-shots-no-longer-recommended-for-2-groups.html\"><b>READ MORE: COVID vaccine change: Shots no longer recommended for 2 groups<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FOA6WVFA4FEOVOXTTJDJOKXWJM\">\u201cMost patients who experienced pruritus after medicine discontinuation reported using these medicines for more than 3 months; however, some experienced this reaction after less than 1 month of use,\u201d the administration said. Restarting the medication and then tapering it resolved the itching problem in most people, the FDA stated. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TQUCTQCB5BCTBHBQV662A5BSIE\">A warning will be added to the medications.
