(ABC News: Daniel Irvine)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Economists say the rationale for multinational firms to spread the cost beyond the US is to avoid dampening demand from American consumers, which is a large and crucial market, by having them foot the bill entirely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;If they impose all of the price increase on the US consumer, that could do a number of things, which is reduce demand significantly by the US consumer,&#8221; former Commonwealth Bank chief economist Stephen Halmarick told The Business.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;It could also bring them some unwanted attention from the [US] president, I would say,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  the now-principal at Economics Unchained noted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The impact could be felt around the world in a matter of weeks and months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;As we get into June, July, August, you&#8217;re going to see price increases around the world,&#8221; Mr Ives said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;You could see prices increase anywhere from 3 to 5 per cent, and then some products potentially double digits.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Growth worries overshadowing inflation risk<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\"><a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-05-20\/reserve-bank-cuts-interest-rates-0-25-to-3-85-pc-in-may\/105314056\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105314056\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">When the Reserve Bank board cut interest rates in May<\/a>, it highlighted the risk to the global economic growth outlook posed by the trade war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It also emphasised that local inflation pressures had eased, and inflation was &#8220;expected to remain around target&#8221;, opening the door to further rate cuts.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman in a white jacket sitting in an office.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/8ae0c49ed6536556536405b7da20e192\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Micaela Fuchila is the chief economist at Jarden.
