Just days after it warned that <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2025\/05\/29\/microsoft-confirms-new-update-failure-for-windows-users\/\" data-ga-track=\"InternalLink:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2025\/05\/29\/microsoft-confirms-new-update-failure-for-windows-users\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"May\u2019s security update was failing\" rel=\"noopener\">May\u2019s security update was failing<\/a> for some users, the company has <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/release-health\/status-windows-11-23H2#kb5058405-might-fail-to-install-with-recovery-error-0xc0000098-in-acpi-sys\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/release-health\/status-windows-11-23H2#kb5058405-might-fail-to-install-with-recovery-error-0xc0000098-in-acpi-sys\" aria-label=\"confirmed\">confirmed<\/a> it has been working the issue and an emergency update is coming soon, telling Windows users it \u201cplans to release an out-of-band update in the coming days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While this affects Windows 11 users, there are echoes of the emergency update for Windows 1o users earlier in the month. Microsoft was quick to acknowledge that it was \u201cinvestigating reports of the May 13, 2025 Windows security update (<a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/help\/5058405\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/help\/5058405\" aria-label=\"KB5058405\">KB5058405<\/a>) failing to install on some Windows 11, version 22H2 and 23H2 devices.\u201d As I reported when that news hit, an out-of-band update was the inevitable next step.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"embed-base color-body color-body-border link-embed embed-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2025\/05\/30\/tsa-warns-iphone-and-android-users-you-need-this-at-airport\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"TSA Warns iPhone And Android Users\u2014You Need This At The Airport\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"forbesEmbedly:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2025\/05\/30\/tsa-warns-iphone-and-android-users-you-need-this-at-airport\/\">ForbesTSA Warns iPhone And Android Users\u2014You Need This At The AirportBy Zak Doffman<\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re affected by the issue, you will see a recovery error warning that \u201cyour PC\/Device needs to be repaired,\u201d and that \u201cthe operating system couldn\u2019t be loaded because a required file is missing or contains errors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft has explained that this ACPI.sys driver issue and will likely display the error code: 0xc0000098. \u201cThe ACPI.sys file (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) is a critical Windows system driver that enables Windows to manage hardware resources and power states.\u201d The company has also warned that \u201cthere are also reports of this same error occurring with a different file name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"embed-base color-body color-body-border link-embed embed-2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2025\/05\/29\/microsoft-onedrive-mistake-check-now-if-all-your-files-have-been-shared\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Microsoft OneDrive Mistake\u2014Check Now If All Your Files Have Been Shared\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"forbesEmbedly:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2025\/05\/29\/microsoft-onedrive-mistake-check-now-if-all-your-files-have-been-shared\/\">ForbesMicrosoft OneDrive Mistake\u2014Check Now If All Your Files Have Been SharedBy Zak Doffman<\/a><\/p>\n<p>While some physical devices have been impacted, most reports of this update failure concern virtual environments, \u201cincluding Azure Virtual Machines, \u200bAzure Virtual Desktop [and] on-premises virtual machines hosted on Citrix or Hyper-V.\u201d That means it\u2019s far more likely to impact enterprise rather than home users.<\/p>\n<p>This is different to <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2025\/05\/21\/microsoft-confirms-emergency-update-for-windows-users\/\" data-ga-track=\"InternalLink:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2025\/05\/21\/microsoft-confirms-emergency-update-for-windows-users\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"May\u2019s other emergency update\" rel=\"noopener\">May\u2019s other emergency update<\/a>, which addressed Windows 10 updates failing with a BitLocker Recovery screen when trying to install May\u2019s security update. \u201cWindows 10 might repeatedly display the BitLocker recovery screen at startup,\u201d the company warned, <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/release-health\/status-windows-10-22h2#windows-10-might-repeatedly-display-the-bitlocker-recovery-screen-at-startup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/release-health\/status-windows-10-22h2#windows-10-might-repeatedly-display-the-bitlocker-recovery-screen-at-startup\" aria-label=\"confirming that other out-of-band update.\">confirming that other out-of-band update.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Emergency update coming soon NurPhoto via Getty Images Another week, another emergency update for Windows users.
