<\/p>\nFormer British Prime Minister Boris Johnson praised T\u00fcrkiye\u2019s rapid infrastructure development during a panel on shifting geopolitical dynamics and the country\u2019s growing global influence, calling it a model the United Kingdom should learn from.<\/p>\n
\u201cT\u00fcrkiye shows all the dynamism in building infrastructure that is woefully lacking in the U.K.,\u201d Johnson said, pointing to stalled or canceled projects in Britain, including the lack of a new runway for London airports and the recent cancellation of a high-speed rail line.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn T\u00fcrkiye, you\u2019ve built colossal airports, amazing new infrastructure, and high-speed rail,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s a lesson for us.\u201d<\/p>\n
Johnson, who served as Mayor of London before becoming prime minister, recalled his efforts to expand transportation networks in the capital. \u201cCrossrail was the biggest engineering project in Europe at the time. I built lots of river crossings,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He added that the U.K.’s pace of development has fallen behind that of T\u00fcrkiye, and praised the country\u2019s ambition, calling it “really inspiring.” He also noted T\u00fcrkiye\u2019s evolving geopolitical role. \u201cThe scale and pace of change here since I first came to T\u00fcrkiye has been extraordinary. T\u00fcrkiye has taken on an ever more important role on the world stage\u2014as a bridge between East and West and, more importantly, as a force for global stability.\u201d<\/p>\n
Johnson also highlighted T\u00fcrkiye\u2019s contributions as a NATO member and its role in regional diplomacy, particularly in Syria. \u201cI hope very much that we\u2019ll have some peace and stability in that country,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He emphasized the shared values between the UK and T\u00fcrkiye, stating that both countries have a key role in \u201creassuring the world about the permanence of our values and restoring some common sense where that is necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n
Turning to the war in Ukraine, Johnson said ending the \u201cmiserable\u201d conflict should be a global priority and praised T\u00fcrkiye\u2019s efforts toward peace. \u201cIn the White House, they are finally understanding that Ukraine didn\u2019t start this war\u2014Russia is the aggressor,\u201d he said. \u201cI think they always did, and it\u2019s very clear to President Trump. I think he is now going to start putting real pressure on Vladimir Putin.\u201d<\/p>\n
The panel was organized by the Turkish Finance Accountants\u2019 Foundation (HUV). Its president, Ahmet Eren, said this year\u2019s event brought together Turkish and international experts, scientists, and politicians to address changes in the global economy in 2023 and 2024.<\/p>\n
Eren noted that the panel was planned before U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s re-election, but that recent developments, including his remarks on April 2, have intensified interest in the event. \u201cAssessing the effects of Trump\u2019s second term in office on the global political and economic system is more important<\/p>\n
