{"id":146407,"date":"2025-05-31T09:04:09","date_gmt":"2025-05-31T09:04:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/146407\/"},"modified":"2025-05-31T09:04:09","modified_gmt":"2025-05-31T09:04:09","slug":"idc-lowers-worldwide-smartphone-shipment-forecast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/146407\/","title":{"rendered":"IDC Lowers Worldwide Smartphone Shipment Forecast"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The volume of worldwide smartphone shipments in 2025 is expected to be impacted by uncertainty, tariff volatility and a slowdown in consumer spending, market intelligence firm International Data Corporation (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.idc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">IDC<\/a>) said Thursday (May 29).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IDC lowered its forecast for worldwide smartphone shipments in 2025 from the 2.3% year-over-year growth it expected in February to 0.6%, the firm said in a Thursday <a href=\"https:\/\/my.idc.com\/getdoc.jsp?containerId=prUS53546025&amp;_gl=1*1lz5fiw*_ga*NTE1OTg2MC4xNzQ4NjIyMjU2*_ga_541ENG1F9X*czE3NDg2MjIyNTUkbzEkZzAkdDE3NDg2MjIyNTUkajYwJGwwJGgw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSince April 2nd, the smartphone industry has faced a whirlwind of uncertainty,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/nabilapopal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Nabila Popal<\/a>, senior research director with IDC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/my.idc.com\/getdoc.jsp?containerId=IDC_P8397\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker<\/a>, said in the release. \u201cWhile current exemptions on smartphones have offered temporary relief, the looming possibility of broader tariffs presents a serious risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite trade tensions between the U.S. and China, those countries are expected to drive this year\u2019s 0.6% growth, according to the release.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.S. market is expected to grow 1.9% in 2025, down from IDC\u2019s previous forecast of 3.3%, the release said. IDC attributed the drop to uncertainty and tariff-related price increases. The company said it expected to see the average selling price of smartphones in the U.S. rise 4%.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">China\u2019s smartphone market is expected to grow 3% in 2025, driven by government subsidies, per the release.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.counterpointresearch.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Counterpoint Technology Market Research<\/a> said May 14 that U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/supply-chain\/2025\/tariffs-drive-smartphone-manufacturers-boost-united-states-inventory-shift-sourcing-india\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">smartphone shipments<\/a> leaped 30% year over year in March as manufacturers raced to bring new inventory into the country ahead of the tariffs that were anticipated and then announced by President Donald Trump April 2.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe increase in shipments in March and early April will help insulate Apple from potential immediate pricing impacts in the U.S. through mid- to late-summer,\u201d Counterpoint Senior Research Analyst <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/gerrit-schneemann-b916b26\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Gerrit Schneemann<\/a> said in a press release at the time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global technology market analyst firm <a href=\"https:\/\/canalys.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Canalys<\/a> said April 30 that after Apple built up its inventory in the first quarter, the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/connectedeconomy\/2025\/samsung-leads-global-smartphone-market-amid-lackluster-industrywide-sales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">smartphone market<\/a> is expected to experience \u201cconsiderable volatility\u201d over the next two or three quarters due to uncertainty around tariffs and weakening consumer confidence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On May 23, Trump threatened to raise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/economy\/2025\/president-donald-trump-threatens-raise-tariffs-apple-european-union\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">tariffs<\/a> on Apple, saying, \u201cI expect their iPhone\u2019s that will be sold in the United States of America will be manufactured and built in the
