These watches represent potential based on our best analyses. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will not know the true nature of this CME\u2019s geomagnetic storm potential until the CME arrives at our solar wind observatories located 1 million miles from Earth.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Upon arrival at those spacecraft, we will know the magnetic strength and orientation that are very important to what levels and duration of geomagnetic storm conditions are expected to occur. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As always visit our website for the latest information and updates.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The  Space Weather Prediction Centre adds that impacts to technological infrastructure are &#8220;possible&#8221; but could be mitigated.<\/p>\n<p>Its impact might also mean the aurora could be visible in the northern half of the United States.<\/p>\n<p>This could be visible as far south as Alabama and Northern California.<\/p>\n<p>What are geomagnetic storms?<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content--intro\">The Met Office defines geomagnetic storms as &#8220;disturbances in the Earth\u2019s magnetic field caused by solar activity&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It lists potential physical impacts as: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Geomagnetically induced currents affecting power lines and pipelines<\/li>\n<li>Increased ionisation\u00a0that can affect radio signals<\/li>\n<li>Thermosphere heating, which can expand and affect satellite orbits<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Technological impacts might include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Potential power grid blackouts during severe events<\/li>\n<li>GNSS and HF communications, such as GPS signals<\/li>\n<li>Satellites, through surface charging and increased drag<\/li>\n<li>Spacecraft operations as a result of radiation and signal interference<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The CME erupted from the Sun on the evening of May 30 and is expected to arrive at Earth on June 1.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;severe&#8221; storm watch is in effect through to June 2.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A RARE &#8220;severe&#8221; warning has been issued for a massive solar storm due to arrive at Earth tomorrow.&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":147248,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3161],"tags":[3082,53,16,15,741],"class_list":{"0":"post-147247","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-internet","8":"tag-internet","9":"tag-technology","10":"tag-uk","11":"tag-united-kingdom","12":"tag-weather"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/114603420056373580","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/147247","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=147247"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/147247\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/147248"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=147247"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=147247"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=147247"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
