{"id":147845,"date":"2025-05-31T22:03:10","date_gmt":"2025-05-31T22:03:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/147845\/"},"modified":"2025-05-31T22:03:10","modified_gmt":"2025-05-31T22:03:10","slug":"while-close-to-the-bottom-the-church-of-england-keeps-on-digging-gaia-vicar-appointed-area-bishop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/147845\/","title":{"rendered":"While close to the bottom, the Church of England keeps on digging &#8211; &#8216;Gaia&#8217; vicar appointed area bishop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The newly-appointed suffragan Bishop of Doncaster presided over a Holy Communion service featuring \u2018Gaia\u2019 as the centrepiece when she was vicar of the prestigious Lancaster Priory in Blackburn Diocese.<\/p>\n<p>Introducing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=S9VVd9QpAlM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">video<\/a>\u00a0of the service in July 2022, promoted on the Church of England\u2019s YouTube channel, the Rev Leah Vasay-Saunders said:<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Lancaster Priory is hosting a 26-day Festival of the Earth, of which the centrepiece is Luke Jerram\u2019s world-renowned installation, \u201cGaia\u201d. We have been thinking about how we create opportunities as people visit our church and experience the awe and wonder of this art to enable them to see and experience something of the work of God in our world and through the work of God\u2019s Church.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Mr Jerram\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/my-earth.org\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>\u00a0says of this touring artwork measuring seven metres (around 23 feet) in diameter: \u2018When presented indoors, the Earth artwork slowly revolves. A specially made surround sound composition by BAFTA award winning Composer Dan Jones\u00a0is played alongside thesculpture. In\u00a0Greek Mythology Gaia is the personification of the\u00a0Earth.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The Gaia, suspended from the ceiling of the Priory above the chancel, revolved continuously during the service, which involved staff and pupils from Ripley St Thomas Church of England Academy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/anglican.ink\/2025\/05\/29\/the-revd-leah-vasey-saunders-announced-as-the-next-bishop-of-doncaster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Announcing<\/a> Bishop-designate Vasey-Saunders\u2019s appointment\u00a0on May 29, the Bishop of Sheffield, Dr Pete Wilcox, said: \u2018I am absolutely delighted by Leah\u2019s appointment! I thank God for calling to our Diocese a gifted, missionary disciple of the Lord Jesus, who is passionate about the proclamation of the Gospel and about the transformation of human lives and communities, and all creation, in anticipation of the coming Kingdom of God.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Leah is a born pastor, who forms partnerships easily and I know people across South Yorkshire and the East Riding (both within the Church of England and beyond it) will quickly warm to her and trust her. Personally, I am looking forward very much to her consecration as a bishop in September and to the prospect of working closely with her.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>During LGBT Pride month in June 2022, Lancaster Priory <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lancasterguardian.co.uk\/news\/people\/sacred-art-exhibit-in-lancaster-celebrates-lgbtq-diversity-during-pride-month-3751688\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hosted<\/a>\u00a0the \u2018Queering the Dream\u2019 exhibition featuring artwork by the American radical Left-wing activist, \u00a0Rev Dr Angela Yarber.
