In honor of the legendary blockbuster\u2019s 50th anniversary, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/news\/general-news\/steven-spielberg-jaws-documentary-1235019533\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Geographic is premiering<\/a> \u201cJaws @ 50: The Definitive Inside Story\u201d in July. From \u201cFaye\u201d and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/criticism\/movies\/music-by-john-williams-review-disney-plus-documentary-1235062113\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cMusic by John Williams\u201d<\/a> filmmaker Laurent Bouzereau, the documentary will explore the notoriously troubled shoot, its groundbreaking release, and the ripple effects the movie had on the industry and beach culture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJaws @ 50\u201d will air at 9 p.m. ET on July 10 on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/t\/national-geographic\/\" id=\"auto-tag_national-geographic\" data-tag=\"national-geographic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Geographic<\/a> and then stream the next day on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/t\/disney-2\/\" id=\"auto-tag_disney-2\" data-tag=\"disney-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Disney+<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/t\/hulu\/\" id=\"auto-tag_hulu\" data-tag=\"hulu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hulu<\/a>. Spielberg, along with production designer Joe Alves, actors Jonathan Filley, Lorriane Gary, Carl Gottieb, Jeffrey Kramer, Jeffrey Voorhees, and composer John Williams are all interviewed. The documentary will also feature insight from high-profile fans and filmmakers, including Jordan Peele, Steven Soderbergh, James Cameron, Cameron Crowe, Emily Blunt, Greg Nicotero, J.J. Courtesy of Netflix &#xA9; 2024\" height=\"168\" width=\"300\"   loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" data-attachment-id=\"1235127288\" data-wp-size=\"nova_size__sixteenbynine_small_cropped\"\/><\/a> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/features\/interviews\/steven-soderbergh-spielberg-jaws-directing-book-1235087037\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Soderbergh told IndieWire\u2019s Filmmaker Toolkit<\/a> podcast in January that he was working on an \u201cinside baseball\u201d book, intended just for filmmakers, on the \u201cJaws\u201d production.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter they\u2019ve done all the land shooting, and they get out into the ocean \u2026 it starts to go bad,\u201d Soderbergh said. \u201cAs a filmmaker, reading these logs and these descriptions, it\u2019s excruciating, it\u2019s painful. I know what it\u2019s like to have things not happening [right], but this is on a level that is just mind-blowing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The chaotic \u201cJaws\u201d history is perhaps best known for its malfunctioning shark. During <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XhOAR0hfVIM\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a 1995 documentary interview<\/a>, Richard Dreyfuss recalled the months-long location shoot in Martha\u2019s Vineyard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were all these radio mics all over the island \u2026 so wherever you were on the island, you could hear the radio mics, and they were always saying, \u2018The shark is not working. The shark is not working. Repeat, the shark is not working.\u2019 No matter where you were and for months,\u201d Dreyfuss recalled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJaws @ 50\u201d is the latest in a string of celebrations for the classic, which will culminate in the unveiling of the Academy Museum of Motion Picture\u2019s ambitious \u201cJaws: The Exhibition\u201d on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/news\/general-news\/jaws-50th-anniversary-academy-museum-exhibition-1235100832\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">September 14<\/a>. In addition to \u201cBruce the Shark,\u201d the 25-foot-long full-scale shark model from the movie that has been on display since the museum\u2019s opening in 2021, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.academymuseum.org\/en\/exhibitions\/jaws\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jaws: The Exhibition<\/a>\u201d will include numerous artifacts and rare documents related to the film, many of which come directly from Spielberg himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJaws\u201d cost less than $9 million to produce, but it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/features\/general\/jaws-modern-blockbuster-steven-spielberg-1201844390\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">grossed over $470 million worldwide<\/a>, beating out a crowded 1975 slate that also included \u201cDog Day Afternoon,\u201d \u201cShampoo\u201d and \u201cOne Flew Over the Cuckoo\u2019s Nest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJaws @ 50\u201d premieres July 10 on National Geographic, and July 11 on Disney+ and Hulu.
