(Reuters: Peter Cziborra\/AP: John Locher)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">World Boxing said they had written to the Algerian Boxing Federation stating that Khelif would not be allowed to compete at the upcoming Eindhoven Box Cup from June 5\u201310 until she underwent the test.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Women&#8217;s welterweight Olympic champion Khelif has not yet commented on the announcement, nor has the Algerian Boxing Federation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The country&#8217;s federation joined World Boxing in September, one of more than 100 national federations that have joined the body since it was established in 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While amendments to competition rules are typically done by the World Boxing Congress, the new policy was adopted by the body&#8217;s executive board, which holds the authority to make immediate amendments under &#8220;special or emergency circumstances&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>New rules to safeguard athletes, says World Boxing<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;These new eligibility rules were developed with the express purpose of safeguarding athletes in combat sports, particularly given the physical risks associated with Olympic-style boxing,&#8221; World Boxing&#8217;s statement said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">All athletes over the age of 18 will have to undertake a PCR (polymerase chain reaction) genetic test, which can be conducted by a nasal or mouth swab, saliva or blood, World Boxing said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-02-13\/imane-khelif-iba-ioc-boxing-donald-trump-transgender\/104930514\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Khelif hits out at IBA<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Imane Khelif accuses the International Boxing Assocation of spreading &#8220;baseless lies and misinformation&#8221; after it cited Donald Trump&#8217;s executive order around transgender athletes in legal action against the IOC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The PCR test is a laboratory technique used to detect specific genetic material, in this case the SRY gene, that reveals the presence of the Y chromosome, which is an indicator of biological sex,&#8221; World Boxing said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Athletes that are deemed to be male at birth, as evidenced by the presence of Y chromosome \u2026 or with a difference of sexual development (DSD) where male androgenisation occurs, will be eligible to compete in the male category.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Athletes that are deemed to be female at birth \u2026 or with a DSD where male androgenisation does not occur, will be eligible to compete in the female category.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In February, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order banning transgender athletes from competing in women&#8217;s sports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In March, Khelif said she was determined to defend her title at the 2028 Los Angeles Games, adding that she would not be intimidated by Trump as she is not transgender.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">At the 2023 world championships, Khelif was disqualified by the International Boxing Association (IBA) after a test that the body said rendered her ineligible to fight as a woman on the grounds of gender.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\"><a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-08-06\/imane-khelif-womens-boxing-trans-a-social-media-pile-on\/104186350\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/104186350\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The IBA lost its Olympic recognition over governance issues<\/a>, however, and the International Olympic Committee cleared Khelif to compete in Paris.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\"><strong>AP\/Reuters<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"World Boxing has confirmed it will introduce mandatory sex testing for all boxers in its competitions.
