There are no images of the device just yet, but the filing clearly lists the name Balance 2 XT, which hasn’t been mentioned before.

XT hints at a possible dual release

I’ve been keeping an eye on the global rollout of Balance 2 ever since it launched in China. So spotting a new variant just ahead of the international release caught my attention. It looks like the global market won’t just be getting the standard Balance 2. We’ll likely be seeing this XT version alongside it.

What the XT actually stands for isn’t clear yet. But this kind of naming usually signals a second-tier option or a slightly tweaked edition.

Could this be the rugged edition?

Given how the Balance 2 already leans tougher than the original with its sapphire glass, military-grade certifications and an 10 ATM rating – one guess is that XT stands for something like “Extreme Terrain” or “Extended Toughness.” That might mean extra rugged certification, or maybe a different strap and bezel combo more suited for trail use. The original Balance 2 is already pretty durable, but XT could be the one they push toward hikers or climbers.

Then again, XT could have nothing to do with toughness. It might focus on software features instead. Zepp has a habit of bundling apps and modes into specific variants. Maybe this is a running-first edition, or a golf-focused version, or something else aimed at one niche. They’ve done that before with models that share the same hardware but offer different use cases.

Essential reading: Top fitness trackers and health gadgets

There’s also the chance this is just a connectivity tweak. One model might ship with LTE or eSIM support, while the standard version stays Bluetooth-only. The model numbers A2546 and A2547 could represent two connectivity options for the same core device.

To remind, in addition to a more tough build, the Balance 2 brings a new processor compared to its predecessor, brighter screen, better heart rate tracking, more storage and longer battery life. There are also new features like a jet lag app, golf mode, along with dual speakers and ZeppOS 5.

No specs yet, but timing is curious

What makes this all a bit more interesting is the timing. The Balance 2 only just launched in China. A global launch is still pending, possibly happening sometime in June based on regulatory activity. So for the XT name to appear now means it’s probably part of the international strategy. Zepp might be planning to offer more than one Balance 2 right out of the gate, rather than spacing out variants over time.

There’s not much to go on yet, other than the regulatory filing. No images, no specs, no hint of pricing. But I’d expect more to leak out soon. If I had to guess, we’ll get both the regular Balance 2 and this XT model announced together.

***This article first appeared on Gadgets & Wearables, where the story was originally reported.

Subscribe to our monthly newsletter!
