Now ecologists have made an \u2018amazing\u2019 discovery | New South Wales"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">A critically endangered possum species thought to be isolated to Victoria has been found in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/new-south-wales\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New South Wales<\/a> alpine national park.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Previously thought to be extinct in the state, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/apr\/05\/we-cant-afford-to-get-this-wrong-relocating-leadbeaters-possums-is-risky-but-its-their-only-chance\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leadbeater\u2019s possum<\/a> has been found in Kosciuszko national park, at least 250km away from the nearest sighting in Victoria.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">A trawl through millions of photos found seven images of the tiny creature over a 10-second span, with the Healesville Sanctuary and the Australian National University confirming the NSW environment department\u2019s find.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The leadbeater\u2019s possum, Victoria\u2019s faunal emblem, has big eyes and a bushy tail. Photograph: DCCEEW<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Dr Fred Ford, a senior threatened species officer at the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, said it was \u201camazing to see that distinctive bushy tail waving among the rows of images on the screen\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cIt jumped right out at me,\u201d he said. \u201cThis discovery highlights that you have to be out there looking at the world to find these rare species.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cYou might not be specifically looking for what you find, but the more you look, particularly using modern techniques such as remote cameras and environmental DNA, the more chance you have to find them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fewer than 40 leadbeater\u2019s possums exist in Victoria. Photograph: Dan Harley<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">NSW Environment Minister Penny Sharpe labelled the find \u201cextraordinary\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cFor ecologists to spot a needle in a haystack of millions of images speaks to their commitment to the conservation cause and demonstrates that NSW government threatened species officers are doing some of the most incredible work,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cThis special find in Kosciuszko National Park once again highlights why the government is taking action to remove invasive species to protect Australia\u2019s only mainland alpine region, which spans the NSW and Victorian border.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">A recent survey found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/article\/2024\/may\/25\/more-than-5000-feral-horses-culled-in-kosciuszko-national-park-since-aerial-shooting-resumed\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the national park\u2019s brumby population<\/a> had been drastically culled via aerial shooting, which Sharpe said was important in providing the right conditions for native species.<\/p>\n<p>A brumby cull in Kosciuszko national park has helped native species, the NSW government says.
