We actually went to Europe for the first time in our lives last year, and we\u2019re in our 60s now, so we\u2019d really like to explore the world.&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">And that&#8217;s exactly what they did &#8211; leaving behind their home, packing up a rental car of their most prized possessions and hopping aboard the <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/travel\/article-14574947\/world-cruise-Villa-vie-odyssey-residential.html\" rel=\"noopener\">Villa Vie ship Odyssey,<\/a> the first world cruise where passengers embark on a three-and-a-half year journey around the globe.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Cruises are often looked at as expensive, but for the Montoyas, they soon realized their dream wouldn&#8217;t cost them any more than it did living in Laramie.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Now, the couple are enjoying their extended vacation for about $80,000 a year after hopping on the\u00a0cruise ship in April to take them to 147 countries, 425 ports and 100 tropical islands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The breakdown of their expenses include the cost of their cabin, three meals a day, entertainment, housekeeping, laundry and internet.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>   <img decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-4df100d468566e4\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/98943527-14769883-image-m-43_1748801821827.jpg\" height=\"481\" width=\"634\" alt=\"Paul and Lynn Montoya were living in Laramie, Wyoming before they decided to pack up their lives and go on a cruise around the world for the next couple of years\" class=\"blkBorder img-share\" style=\"max-width:100%\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>   <\/p>\n<p class=\"imageCaption\">Paul and Lynn Montoya were living in Laramie, Wyoming before they decided to pack up their lives and go on a cruise around the world for the next couple of years\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>   <img decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-dd77b3099eca14e8\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/98943531-14769883-image-a-23_1748801644965.jpg\" height=\"357\" width=\"634\" alt=\"They hopped aboard the Villa Vie ship Odyssey (pictured), the first world cruise where passengers embark on a three-and-a-half year journey around the globe\" class=\"blkBorder img-share\" style=\"max-width:100%\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>   <\/p>\n<p class=\"imageCaption\">They hopped aboard the Villa Vie ship Odyssey (pictured), the first world cruise where passengers embark on a three-and-a-half year journey around the globe<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The cheapest cabin option starts at $129,000 with a $2,999 monthly maintenance fee &#8211; around $45,000 annually &#8211; for one person to stay there.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">For two people, the fee is $3,999 or $57,000 a year, and, according to the<a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/villavieresidences.com\/\"> ship&#8217;s website<\/a>, the occupancy range could go up to at least 15 years if desired.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Although it is unclear how much the couple were paying for their home, the average cost of a home in Laramie is estimated at $378,258, according to<a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zillow.com\/home-values\/32431\/laramie-wy\/\"> Zillow.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;That\u2019s one of the things the Odyssey really does is they\u2019re trying to program this for affordable living,&#8217; Lynn told the outlet. &#8216;It\u2019s similar to maybe like a retirement community, like a 55-plus community.&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">She went on to compare their new lifestyle to those living in two of the most expensive locations in the US.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;If you\u2019re living in California or New York or something that, I don\u2019t think you could even live in a rented apartment for that nowadays,&#8217; she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;For them, this is probably an easy decision. For us, this is the same lifestyle we had in Laramie, but we\u2019re getting to see the world.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">She and her husband also don&#8217;t have to stay in their cabins the entire time, as they have options to leave to attend important family events like funerals or weddings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">They also have the option to rent out their cabin like Airbnb does with houses. But we\u2019re hoping the value will be there where we can actually sell (the cabin) for the amount we paid, maybe more if it\u2019s really popular,&#8217; he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">There is even flexibility with how cabins are paid for as the cruise offers a pay-as-you-go plan to those who can&#8217;t afford it outright.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The Montoya&#8217;s even met a man who owns two cabins &#8211; one for him and another to rent out.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Now what he\u2019s doing is renting both of those out and, with the money he\u2019s renting it for, he\u2019s paying for life on the ship,&#8217; Lynn explained.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;He\u2019s one of the ones who left in August, so he\u2019s been doing that for some time.&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Although the cabins are affordable &#8211; when compared to the cost of living on land in the US &#8211; the couple warned that there is not too much space to work with.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;A typical cabin is about 200 square feet.
