(Reuters: Edgar Su)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Defence spending currently sits at about 2 per cent of GDP, and an immediate lift in ambition to 3.5 per cent would amount to about $40 billion extra a year \u2014 about as much as the Commonwealth&#8217;s annual aged care spending.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the country would not be dictated to on defence spending, noting that it was already due to increase from 2 to 2.33<strong> <\/strong>per cent of Australia&#8217;s GDP over the next eight<strong> <\/strong>years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;What we&#8217;ll do is we&#8217;ll determine our defence policy, and we&#8217;ve invested just across the forwards, an additional $10 billion in defence,&#8221; Mr Albanese said on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But Mr Hegseth warned Australia must lift spending faster with a &#8220;real and potentially imminent&#8221; threat from China.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The United States spends almost $US1 trillion ($1.5 trillion) a year on defence, 3.4 per cent of its GDP and more than the next nine highest-spending countries combined.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-06-01\/china-rejects-us-groundless-warnings-taiwan-invasion-threat\/105363336\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">China derides US over Taiwan remarks<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">China has accused the US of making &#8220;groundless accusations&#8221; about developing threats by Beijing, particularly in its aggressive stance toward Taiwan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Coalition promised an extra $21 billion over five years on defence above current levels at the federal election, with an &#8220;aspiration&#8221; to reach 3.5 per cent of GDP being spent on defence over time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Shadow Finance Minister James Paterson told Nine spending should be lifted further.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We live in the most dangerous and precarious times since the end of World War II.
