{"id":151217,"date":"2025-06-02T04:39:12","date_gmt":"2025-06-02T04:39:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/151217\/"},"modified":"2025-06-02T04:39:12","modified_gmt":"2025-06-02T04:39:12","slug":"scientists-are-trying-to-discover-if-theres-life-on-mars-in-stevenage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/151217\/","title":{"rendered":"Scientists are trying to discover if\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0life on Mars\u2026\u00a0In Stevenage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n\t\t\t\t\tA UK laboratory is building the Mars Rover, a robot which will travel to the Red Planet to look for signs of life\t\t\t\t\t                <\/p>\n<p>STEVENAGE, ENGLAND \u2013 In a innocuous factory in Stevenage, with brown brick walls and large grey car park, is the <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/topic\/mars?srsltid=AfmBOorI2QIiyEicjeCyZZl1srPG2CGyb7oCOMNCd4vJyYWhY5u3DfH5&amp;ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">planet Mars.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Well, not quite. This is a laboratory, less than a half-hour train ride from London.<\/p>\n<p>Built by aerospace company Airbus, it has been designed to mimic the conditions of Mars, with zero-moisture orange sand, rocks and bright lights to replicate its shadows.<\/p>\n<p>This lab is used to train the Mars rover, a robot which will soon be sent into space to collect evidence of possible <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/mars-and-venus-an-obsession-through-space-and-time-from-art-and-religion-to-science-1038619?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">life on Mars.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>The site was built in Stevenage more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukspacefacilities.stfc.ac.uk\/Pages\/Airbus-DS-Stevenage.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">six decades ago<\/a>, with the location selected because it was deemed at the time to be outside the blast radius of a nuclear bomb if one was dropped on London.<\/p>\n<p>The current \u201cMars Yard\u201d, as the lab is known, was opened in 2014, and is used as a test site for the rover.<\/p>\n<p>Named Rosalind Franklin after the British molecular scientist, the rover is set to depart in 2028 as part of the European Space Agency\u2019s ExoMars mission.<\/p>\n<p>However, it <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/science\/mars-helicopter-flight-nasa-ingenuity-touch-down-first-another-planet-962775?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">won\u2019t be able to land until 2030.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the slightly tricky parts of launching to Mars is that you only have specific times that you can actually launch,\u201d explains Yvonne Pickering, senior autonomous driving and robots engineer at Airbus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/science\/moon-what-planet-next-occultation-mars-eclipse-explained-2015931?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Earth and Mars are in different orbits.<\/a> If you launch at the wrong time, Mars could be sort of around the other side of the Sun, which wouldn\u2019t help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The launch window opens every 26 months and lasts for 22 days. <\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"802\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/SEI_252790969.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3723191\"  \/>Yvonne Pickering, senior autonomous driving and robots engineer at Airbus (Photo: Robbie Hawken\/ The i Paper)<\/p>\n<p>After launch, it will take nine months to reach Mars, but the Red Planet will be embroiled in a mammoth dust storm at the rover\u2019s due date.<\/p>\n<p>The dust would block the solar panels on the rover which give it power, so instead, it will wait in a \u201cparking orbit\u201d for another nine months until the dust clears and it can safely land.<\/p>\n<p>After landing, the rover will begin to dig into the ground to look for organic matter under the surface and analyse the samples it collects.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, scientists found <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/science\/mars-water-reservoir-deep-beneath-surface-3224417?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">evidence of a large underground reservoir of liquid water on Mars<\/a> \u2013 enough to fill oceans on the planet\u2019s surface.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe point of the mission is that we\u2019re going to look for signs of life. Mars doesn\u2019t have an atmosphere like Earth does, or a magnetic field, so it doesn\u2019t get the same protection that Earth does. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/SEI_252790997.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3723194\"  \/>The rover\u2019s eyes help it scan for hazards in front of it (Photo: Robbie Hawken\/ The i Paper)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRadiation hits the surface of Mars and it will destroy everything on the top layers. So we\u2019re going to have to drill down into roughly around two metres, which is where we think that we may still be able to find some organic matter that hasn\u2019t been destroyed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe drill will go down roughly two metres. It will pick up a sample, bring it back up and put it on board into a middle area that we call the bathtub area of the rover. In there, it will then do a whole bunch of scientific tests on that sample to work out whether that contains any kind of organic material.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The organic material the rover collects isn\u2019t expected to be alive, but scientists hope it could be evidence of life which was once present on Mars.<\/p>\n<p>The robot will send its results back to Earth via satellite.<\/p>\n<p>But navigating the Red Planet is no mean feat.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/SEI_252790925.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3723192\"  \/>Pickering can control the rover from a laptop. When on Mars, it will be sent to locations by scientists on Earth (Photo: Robbie Hawken\/ The i Paper)<\/p>\n<p>If Mars and Earth are on opposite sides of their orbit, there can be a time lag of up to 45 minutes between the two planets.<\/p>\n<p>This makes it almost impossible for a human to safely steer the rover, because it would be likely to have already hit an obstacle by the time its human handlers have spotted it and tried to change course.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, they have built the rover to drive itself across the Red Planet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe scientists could tell us where they would like to drill, and we will tell the rover \u2018we want you to go to this point\u2019, and the rover will have to find its own path to get there,\u201d Yvonne says.<\/p>\n<p>It moves, however, under heavy restrictions, with limits on what size rock it can roll over or how steep an incline it can travel up.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/SEI_252790973.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3723196\"  \/>The rover\u2019s wheels are designed to be flexible but with strong grip, to avoid it toppling over rocks on Mars (Photo: Robbie Hawken\/ The i Paper)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has to make sure it keeps itself safe. That\u2019s really key,\u201d Pickering says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have no righting mechanisms [for] if the rover fell over. If the rover went fully over onto its side, that is game over. The problem is, it\u2019s so difficult to think of all the possible ways that the rover could get itself stuck, and then try and have something that could combat that, the better idea is to just keep the rover safe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of that makes it quite complicated for the rover to actually work out a safe path. So it does go quite slowly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It travels around 2cm a second, stopping and taking three camera images, analysing the terrain in front of it, finding a path, travelling for 2.5m and then stopping.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt can take a little while for the rover to make progress, but we always make sure that we\u2019re safe,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Does Yvonne believe there\u2019s life on Mars?
