Sir: Once again we must debate Brexit (\u2018Starmer vs the workers\u2019, 24 May). The \u2018reset\u2019 agreement does give more control over UK domestic policy to the EU, if the points outlined in it are followed through. I assume they will be, as that\u2019s what Labour\u2019s front bench wants. (The prospect of us rushing through EU passport control, as Michael Gove and others suggest, is still unlikely, though \u2013 the document states only that there will be the \u2018potential use of e-gates where appropriate\u2019.)<\/p>\n
Britain must pay for many of the extra \u2018benefits\u2019. Apparently the boost to the UK amounts to \u00a39 billion by 2040, but I\u2019m unable to identify any government research that supports this \u2013 only an assertion in a press release. According to the release, in the absence of agreement on the EU\u2019s carbon trading system, UK exporters will contribute \u00a3800 million to the EU from 2026. My own simplistic calculation is that if this is repeated for 15 years, it would cost us \u00a312 billion. If this is treated as a benefit by our government, then there are no other benefits \u2013 but only costs \u2013 to reach a total of \u00a39 billion.<\/p>\n
And Richard Johnson (\u2018Left alone\u2019, 24 May) wants government loans with union and workers\u2019 conditions attached to the fishing industry. Socialism never dies! Simply giving tax credits for such investment would be 100 per cent better.<\/p>\n
