These freckle-like sunspots are also creating opportunities to view the Northern Lights on Sunday night, but the hazy air could obstruct the view.<\/p>\n<p data-v-d11d7278=\"\"><strong>(FOX 9)<\/strong> &#8211; The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox9.com\/weather\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Northern Lights<\/a> are expected to be visible Sunday night, but haze from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox9.com\/news\/western-half-mn-red-air-quality-alert-canada-wildfire-smoke\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wildfire smoke<\/a> might spoil the show for Minnesota.<\/p>\n<p>   Northern Lights forecast <\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-d11d7278=\"\">What we know:<\/p>\n<p data-v-d11d7278=\"\">The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is forecasting a severe (G4) level geomagnetic storm on Sunday evening. Geomagnetic storms are what fuel the aurora and a G4 is the second-strongest level of storm.<\/p>\n<p data-v-d11d7278=\"\">The NOAA forecast shows the aurora could be visible as far south as central Iowa.<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/northern-lights-2-sized.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-v-0dea8073=\"\"\/> <\/p>\n<p data-v-0dea8073=\"\">Northern lights in Vadnais Heights, Minnesota, on Oct. 10, 2024. It appears that&#8217;s about the time the storm will be at its strongest in the overnight hours.<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/aurora-forecast.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-v-0dea8073=\"\"\/>  Smoke will likely hamper aurora visibility <\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-d11d7278=\"\">The other side:<\/p>\n<p data-v-d11d7278=\"\">Unfortunately for Minnesota, smoke from wildfires burning in Canada has made skies hazy across the state, and particularly in areas to the north.<\/p>\n<p data-v-d11d7278=\"\">While it might not be impossible to see the aurora, FOX 9 meteorologist Ian Leonard compares it to a foggy morning. He says it is worth taking a look in your area, to see if you can spot anything, but it&#8217;s probably not worth traveling a far distance to seek out the aurora.<\/p>\n<p data-v-d11d7278=\"\">Much of Minnesota is under an unhealthy air quality alert due to smoke.<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/northern-lights-graphic.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-v-0dea8073=\"\"\/>  <strong>Tips for viewing the Northern Lights<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-d11d7278=\"\">What you can do:<\/p>\n<p data-v-d11d7278=\"\">The NOAA recommends the following tips for the best chance to see the Northern Lights.<\/p>\n<ul original-article-post=\"\" data-v-03e8ff79=\"\" data-v-d11d7278=\"\">\n<li class=\"article-ct\" data-v-03e8ff79=\"\">It&#8217;s generally better to go north (but with the smoke, that might not be the case tonight).<\/li>\n<li class=\"article-ct\" data-v-03e8ff79=\"\">Go to areas with less light pollution.
