{"id":151485,"date":"2025-06-02T07:07:14","date_gmt":"2025-06-02T07:07:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/151485\/"},"modified":"2025-06-02T07:07:14","modified_gmt":"2025-06-02T07:07:14","slug":"whats-the-future-of-techcrunch-in-europe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/151485\/","title":{"rendered":"What\u2019s the future of TechCrunch in Europe?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u2018TechCrunch rocks industry with European shutdown,\u2019 screamed today\u2019s headline in rival media brand Sifted.<\/p>\n<p>The article, written by news editor Martin Coulter and FinTech reporter Tom Matsuda, lacked a response from TechCrunch or new owner Regent but the evidence is compelling.<\/p>\n<p>A succession of TechCrunch\u2019s big name writers have taken to social media to say they\u2019ve left the building.<\/p>\n<p>Long-serving senior reporter Romain Dillet wrote: \u201cI\u2019m leaving TechCrunch after an incredibly long run covering tech and startups, reporting on the French tech ecosystem and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a bittersweet moment for me, as I didn\u2019t leave TechCrunch on my own terms. Regent LP, a private equity firm, acquired TechCrunch and laid off most of the international team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey thought international startup coverage wasn\u2019t essential. I strongly disagree with that decision. But I genuinely want this team to succeed because it remains an incredibly talented group of people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One well-placed tech figure told BusinessCloud said: \u201cAll the staff have left or been laid off.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe the new owners will hire new European staff, but even if they do, they\u2019ve gutted it of some real talent and it\u2019s a massive shame.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dillet is just the latest in a succession of TechCrunch staffers to have exited the organisation.<\/p>\n<p>Former news editor and writer Ingrid Lunden wrote on LinkedIn that April 30th was her last day at TechCrunch after 13+ years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m looking for a new job, ideally staying in tech and most ideally as a journalist,\u201d she added. \u201cI hope for TechCrunch to keep burning bright.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her former colleague Natasha Lomas has already been appointed tech editor of Euractiv after leaving TechCrunch in April after more than 12 years.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"pc6mso5Pnh\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/businesscloud.co.uk\/news\/how-does-steven-bartlett-make-his-millions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How does Steven Bartlett make his millions?<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Senior writer Paul Sawers told his LinkedIn network: \u201cThat\u2019s a wrap, folks. I\u2019ve left TechCrunch after a pretty great three years \u2014 this isn\u2019t how I hoped it would all end, but nothing lasts forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>TechCrunch was founded June 11, 2005, to report on all things tech and has forged a reputation as the go-to place for startups.<\/p>\n<p>In March 2025, TechCrunch trumpeted its sale to Regent, which was founded 12 years ago by Michael Reinstein and is described as a \u2018dynamic private equity firm\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The TechCrunch story read: \u201cWhile the financial terms remain undisclosed, one thing is clear: Regent is acquiring an iconic brand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe best part: This deal is structured to ensure minimal disruption to TechCrunch\u2019s operations. You can almost think of it more like a software update rather than a system overhaul.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut here\u2019s what really matters: The same team of expert journalists you know and trust will continue bringing you the must-read stories of the tech world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout a doubt, this is the strongest TechCrunch team we\u2019ve ever had.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For their part Regent said<strong>:<\/strong> \u201cTechCrunch has been the number one publisher for all things startups since its founding in 2005, and we\u2019re thrilled to expand its reach as it provides breaking technology news, opinions, and analysis on tech companies worldwide to our audience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s fair to say the tub-thumping language has a hollow ring to it this morning in light of TechCrunch\u2019s apparent exodus from Europe.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-169510\" class=\"size-full wp-image-169510\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Mike-Butcher-TechCrunch.jpg\" alt=\"Mike Butcher, founding editor-at-large, TechCrunch\" width=\"800\" height=\"500\"  \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-169510\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mike Butcher, founding editor-at-large, TechCrunch<\/p>\n<p>In the absence of a fresh statement from TechCrunch or its new owners, all eyes have turned to founding editor-at-large \u00a0Mike Butcher for some clarity on what\u2019s happening.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s recognised as one of the most influential journalists in European technology and was awarded an MBE in 2016 for services to the UK technology industry and journalism.<\/p>\n<p>One tech observer told BusinessCloud: \u201cMike Butcher hasn\u2019t outright confirmed he\u2019s left but his author bio is in the past tense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s not made an official statement but he did reply to a LinkedIn post from Philipp von Roeder, who claimed: \u201cLooks like the exodus is complete: TechCrunch no longer has editorial staff in Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Butcher replied: \u201cHave you even reached out to anyone to get actual confirmation before posting on LinkedIn?
