(ABC News: Yannes Wong)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I became a full-time housewife,&#8221; said Mrs Siu.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While she was busy adjusting to her new environment, Mrs Siu believed her 17-year-old daughter was also struggling, albeit silently, to adapt.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;[When] we spent more time together \u2026 I started to see her struggling both socially and academically,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Her English teacher was the first to mention it, and I thought it may be a learning issue like dyslexia. (ABC News: Yannes Wong)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Kin Chan, a creative therapist and migrant parent, understands the importance of culturally responsive practice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Since migrating to Australia from Hong Kong in 2022, he has been running events and seminars on mental health for immigrant families.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The workshops raise awareness around mental health challenges children face, and provide support to both children and parents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Chan said part of the issue was that migrant parents tend to focus on &#8220;solving the problem&#8221; rather than &#8220;understanding the problem&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Children have to readapt completely to the local culture, the school&#8217;s culture, the education system,&#8221; said Mr Chan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He said changes in family dynamics due to the move could have an impact on children&#8217;s emotional wellbeing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Chan said not only did &#8220;children always learn from their parents&#8221;, they also often mirrored their parents&#8217; emotions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">For example, if the parents feel anxious after moving to a new country, the children may feel anxious too.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;You can get help&#8217;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-11-25\/adult-adhd-diagnosis-china-\/103146620\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">What it&#8217;s like to be diagnosed with ADHD as an adult in China<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Vivian Li didn&#8217;t realise she had ADHD until she was an adult \u2014 but that&#8217;s a common experience for many people in China.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">When it comes to mental health, Nepalese migrant Reshma Manandhar is making sure her children are informed on the topic and feel comfortable asking for help.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I have made it very clear, we talk about it openly at home,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not a hidden subject for us.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mrs Manandhar&#8217;s effort with her children was inspired by her own mental health challenge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She experienced postnatal depression after the family moved to Australia in 2002.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Manandhar said while children could access mental health support at school, migrant parents needed to &#8220;normalise&#8221; discussion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;A lot more work needs to be done to take that stigma out of the mental health issue in a non-English speaking, diaspora community,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We have to normalise it and say, &#8216;It&#8217;s OK, you can get help&#8217;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mrs Siu\u00a0agreed, adding that ADHD needed to be normalised in daily conversations, and not treated as something taboo or shameful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She said friends and family can also play a supportive role by speaking about neurodivergence in a positive light.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">To assist people with limited English language skills understand the signs and symptoms of mental health, AMES Australia has developed resources with Beyond Blue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The resources also help those working with migrants to identify when a new arrival is experiencing a mental health issue, not just culture shock.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s another part of the orientation to Australian society and then our health system,&#8221; said Lucia Halliburton from AMES, an organisation that helps migrants and others settle in Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;And it definitely signals that positive mental health and discussing mental health is not stigmatised in Australia,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Back in Hong Kong, Wing Siu worked nine to 12 hours a day.
