To some, it\u2019s a community shop or caf\u00e9; to others, it\u2019s a training ground to get back to work. They have free art\/textile club drop-in sessions too, but for all, it\u2019s a safe place where lives are reshaped.<\/p>\n

Over the last three decades, Mustard Tree has grown from a modest operation offering free food and clothing to a multifaceted organisation that embodies the power of compassion and getting people back on their feet. To provide a helping hand that not only uplifts individuals but also empowers them to regain control of their lives.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Through training programs, 1-2-1 support, job placements, and community initiatives, this extraordinary charity has left a mark on countless lives.<\/p>\n

Clint West, who began his journey with Mustard Tree in 2017, shared how what started as a four-week placement evolved into an eight-year-long commitment as a staff member. \u201cThis place offers a sense of security and comfort that\u2019s hard to put into words,\u201d Clint reflected.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s such a unique environment. Every day is different, and the people you meet, with their stories and experiences, make it a truly amazing place to work. Everyone is full of kindness and passion for helping others, it\u2019s inspiring every day.<\/p>\n

Clint\u2019s journey is emblematic of Mustard Tree\u2019s impact. Initially, he joined Mustard Tree in the hope of updating his CV with some shifts. But Clint enjoyed his time there so much, he soon became a Freedom Volunteer Supervisor, training others in retail and sales, and ultimately finding himself in a fulfilling role within the Community Shop.<\/p>\n

For Clint, Mustard Tree was not just a 9 to 5: it was a catalyst for personal growth and to take control of his independence.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s like being part of a family. Everyone is supportive, and there\u2019s a genuine willingness to help one another.\u201d<\/p>\n

Building skills, confidence, and dreams<\/p>\n

Mustard Tree\u2019s Community Shops in Ancoats, Eccles<\/a>, and Little Hulton serve as places where individuals can access high-quality second-hand items at affordable prices.\u00a0<\/p>\n

For many, these shops are a symbol of dignity and choice. Lindsey, the Head of Operations, explained, \u201cThe Community Shop gives people the dignity to choose how they want their homes to look and how they live their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

Volunteers like Benson Salah from Sudan, who initially visited Mustard Tree as a shopper, found an inspiring path forward within its community.<\/p>\n

Benson\u2019s passion for helping others led him to become a volunteer, where he discovered opportunities for learning and making connections.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an environment where I can be social and chat with people,\u201d Benson shared. \u201cBeing here makes me feel like I\u2019m part of the team, and I\u2019m growing as an individual.\u201d<\/p>\n

A diverse and inclusive community

From refugees seeking stability to individuals facing employment barriers, Mustard Tree\u2019s inclusive ethos creates an environment where everyone can flourish.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Eliza Yeung, a volunteer at reception who moved to Manchester from Hong Kong, found a sense of belonging and purpose through her work.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cVolunteering at Mustard Tree has given me the chance to meet so many amazing people from different backgrounds,\u201d Eliza said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve made a lot of friends, learned about Manchester, and started to feel at home in the UK.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eliza\u2019s experience shows how Mustard Tree can bridge cultural and social divides, building connections that transcend differences.<\/p>\n

Food Club

For refugees, like those supported by Reception volunteer Jane through the Food Club and refugee hub, Mustard Tree offers vital resources and a compassionate hand to guide them through difficult transitions.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the strengths of Mustard Tree is our ability to signpost people to the right places if we can\u2019t provide direct support\u201d, Jane explained.<\/p>\n

Creating confidence and empowering people<\/p>\n

For individuals like Jade Gunning, Mustard Tree has been a stepping stone to employment and self-confidence. Working in the charity\u2019s caf\u00e9, Jade gained invaluable experience that prepared her for the workforce.<\/p>\n

\u201cBefore I joined, I\u2019d stay in bed and wasn\u2019t motivated to do anything,\u201d Jade said. \u201cBut now, I actually look forward to getting out of bed and meeting new people.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve loved my six months here: it\u2019s been fantastic, and the people are so nice. It\u2019s prepared me for going out into the world and getting a job.\u201d<\/p>\n

A charity in challenging times<\/p>\n

As the cost of living crisis and global conflicts continue to place immense pressure on communities, Mustard Tree\u2019s work has never been more vital.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Jane emphasised the importance of the charity\u2019s role: \u201cThere\u2019s so much pressure on government spending and social services, and sometimes people just need somewhere to go. A friendly face to help them navigate things when they don\u2019t know where else to turn. That\u2019s what\u2019s on offer here.\u201d<\/p>\n

This sentiment is echoed by Laurence Tientcheu, whose work at the help desk and Food Club embodies the charity\u2019s mission to provide practical support and heartfelt connection. \u201cMoments like that, being able to truly help someone, are incredibly fulfilling,\u201d Laurence shared.<\/p>\n
