Investing to our capability and investing in our relationships.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Albanese added that his government is already increasing defence spending by about 10 billion Australian dollars ($6.5bn).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re continuing to lift up,\u201d he said, citing his government\u2019s goal to increase spending to 2.3 percent of GDP by 2033.<\/p>\n<p>However, the government is facing other demands on its budget.<\/p>\n<p>Albanese was speaking from a farm in the state of South Australia, which is experiencing a significant drought.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Australia\u2019s treasurer said the country is facing a bill of billions due to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/5\/24\/australia-begins-clean-up-after-floods-kill-5-strand-thousands\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent floods<\/a> in New South Wales and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/3\/8\/cyclone-alfred-weakens-but-dangerous-winds-flooding-continue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cyclone Alfred<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Public broadcaster ABC reported that increasing military spending to 3.5 percent of GDP would cost 100 billion Australian dollars ($65bn) annually, 40 billion Australian dollars ($25bn) more than it spends currently.<\/p>\n<p>Matt Grudnoff, a senior economist with The Australia Institute, said \u201cAustralia already spends more than it should\u201d on defence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWere Australia to increase its defence spending to 2.3% of GDP, we would be the ninth biggest spender on defence and the military,\u201d Grudnoff said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAustralia would be devoting more of its economy to defence than France and Taiwan, and on a par with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/6\/1\/uk-plans-2bn-weapons-upgrade-as-starmer-calls-for-war-readiness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the United Kingdom<\/a>,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Worldwide military spending increased by 9.4 percent in 2024, the sharpest rise since the end of the Cold War, in part driven by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/4\/28\/europe-leads-global-defence-spending-rise-awakening-to-security-deficit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increased spending by European countries<\/a>, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-3747240\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/2025-05-31T052856Z_1245257097_RC2TSEA866F3_RTRMADP_3_ASIA-SECURITY-1748844479.jpg\" alt=\"men in suits talk at a reception\" fetchpriority=\"low\"\/>Hegseth and Marles speak on the sidelines of the IISS Shangri-La Dialogue security summit in Singapore, on Saturday [Edgar Su\/Reuters]<\/p>\n<p>The Australian government has already committed to spending hundreds of billions of dollars on US-manufactured nuclear submarines under its AUKUS agreement with the US and the UK in the coming decades.<\/p>\n<p>It estimates that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2023\/3\/9\/australia-to-buy-as-many-as-five-nuclear-subs-from-united-states\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">programme<\/a> could cost up to 368 billion Australian dollars ($238bn).<\/p>\n<p>Hegseth and Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles discussed security issues, including accelerating US defence capabilities in Australia and advancing industrial base cooperation during a meeting on Friday, a Pentagon statement said on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Australia\u2019s role in manufacturing weapons components has come under increasing scrutiny amid Israel\u2019s war on the Gaza Strip, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2024\/3\/28\/australia-challenged-on-moral-failure-of-weapons-trade-with-israel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">protests outside Australian weapons factories<\/a> and at Australian ports, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2023\/11\/10\/australian-arms-exports-to-israel-in-focus-amid-court-case-port-protests\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">legal challenges<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Albanese says Australia\u2019s position on Taiwan has not changed<\/p>\n<p>Hegseth\u2019s call for Australia to increase its military spending comes after the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/5\/31\/us-defence-chief-warns-of-china-threat-as-beijings-top-brass-skip-summit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told the Shangri-La Dialogue<\/a> on Saturday that \u201cthe threat China poses is real, and it could be imminent\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no reason to sugar-coat it,\u201d the Pentagon chief added. The US continues to warn of the threat that China poses to Taiwan, which Beijing considers part of Chinese territory.<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s Defence Minister Dong Jun skipped the conference, which is considered to be the region\u2019s top security event.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/6\/1\/china-warns-us-not-to-play-with-fire-over-taiwan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">responded<\/a> by saying: \u201cThe US should not entertain illusions about using the question over Taiwan as a bargaining chip to contain China, nor should it play with fire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked about Hegseth\u2019s remarks, Albanese said Australia will \u201cdetermine our defence policy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur position with regard to Taiwan is very clear, [and] has been for a long period of time, which is a bipartisan position to support the status quo,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"PM Albanese says government already increasing spending and decisions will be based on defence capability needs.
