{"id":152187,"date":"2025-06-02T13:25:19","date_gmt":"2025-06-02T13:25:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/152187\/"},"modified":"2025-06-02T13:25:19","modified_gmt":"2025-06-02T13:25:19","slug":"serena-williams-caused-controversy-at-french-open-by-wearing-banned-kit-before-beating-sister-venus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/152187\/","title":{"rendered":"Serena Williams caused controversy at French Open by wearing banned kit before beating sister Venus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Serena Williams was a trailblazer on and off the court.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion amassed over $95 million in career earnings and is widely regarded as the GOAT female tennis player.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Williams won three titles at Roland Garros\" height=\"640\" width=\"960\" data-credit=\"AFP\" data-img=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/2013-french-tennis-open-final-904080702.jpg\" data-caption=\"Williams won three titles at Roland Garros\"   loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/2013-french-tennis-open-final-904080702.jpg\" role=\"img\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>7<\/p>\n<p>Williams won three titles at Roland GarrosCredit: AFP<\/p>\n<p>The retired <a href=\"https:\/\/talksport.com\/tennis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tennis<\/a> ace continually pushed the boundaries during her playing career, especially when it came to fashion.<\/p>\n<p>Serena&#8217;s iconic &#8216;superhero&#8217; outfit <a href=\"https:\/\/talksport.com\/tennis\/1866096\/serena-williams-us-open-dress-retirement-rule-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">forced an entire rule change at the 2018 French Open<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At the same tournament 16 years prior, <a href=\"https:\/\/talksport.com\/who\/serena-williams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Williams<\/a> caused a stir by playing in a custom tennis kit inspired by the Cameroonian national team.<\/p>\n<p>The year was 2002 and the <a href=\"https:\/\/talksport.com\/topic\/french-open\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">French Open<\/a> happened to overlap with the World Cup in Japan and Korea.<\/p>\n<p>The Indomitable Lions, led by ex <a href=\"https:\/\/talksport.com\/sport\/football\/team\/113445\/barcelona\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Barcelona<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/talksport.com\/sport\/football\/team\/113079\/inter-milan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Inter Milan<\/a> striker Samuel Eto\u2019o, were embroiled in their own kit controversy that summer when then their sleeveless shirts were banned from the 2002 World Cup.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/talksport.com\/topic\/fifa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FIFA<\/a> banned the Cameroonian squad from wearing their signature sleeveless shirts because they were &#8216;vests&#8217; and not &#8216;shirts&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>When the World Cup eventually rolled around, the African nation protested FIFA&#8217;s decision by wearing the same shirts but with black sleeves underneath them.<\/p>\n<p>Puma were the creative minds behind the iconic shirts, and just so happened to be Serena&#8217;s sponsor as she headed to Paris that year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"SHIZUOKA, JAPAN:  The Cameroon team poses on the green 11 June, 2002 before match 35 group E of the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea Japan opposing Cameroon and Germany 11 June, 2002 in Shizuoka, Japan. (Photo by Phil Cole\/Getty Images)\" height=\"960\" width=\"640\" data-credit=\"Getty\" data-img=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/S0530_French_Open_PC000jpg-JS905992328.jpg\" data-caption=\"The outfit featured the African nation's colors and featured a crest of the country\"   loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/S0530_French_Open_PC000jpg-JS905992328.jpg\" role=\"img\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>7<\/p>\n<p>The outfit featured the African nation&#8217;s colors and featured a crest of the countryCredit: Getty<\/p>\n<p>At the time, the 20-year-old phenom was the world no. 3 and in search of her second Grand Slam title after winning on home soil at the 1999 <a href=\"https:\/\/talksport.com\/topic\/us-open\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">US Open<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sensing an opportunity, Williams and Puma collaborated on their own version of the banned Cameroonian kit for her to wear at Roland  Garros.<\/p>\n<p>During the first two rounds of the second Grand Slam of the year, Serena rocked a sleeveless green dress trimmed with red, black and yellow, which prominently featured the Cameroon crest. <\/p>\n<p>The homage to the 2002 World Cup team was complete with yellow high socks, matching green and yellow shoes, and a color- coordinated headband to match.<\/p>\n<p>Serena even requested a no. 26 to be stitched onto the back as a nod to her birth date, but it was rejected by tournament organizers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince I always wear sleeveless things, Puma came up with this idea for me during the French Open to wear the Cameroon outfit, which is really exciting,\u201d Serena explained at the time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was reading an article where it says that Cameroon is everyone\u2019s favorite team,\u201d she added. \u201c[Even] if you\u2019re supporting England, a lot of people have this love for Cameroon because they\u2019re always fighting so much it seems. They\u2019re the best African team.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, Cameroon failed to get out of their group at the 2002 World Cup, finishing in third place in Group E, ahead of <a href=\"https:\/\/talksport.com\/sport\/football\/team\/113336\/saudi-arabia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Saudi Arabia<\/a> but behind the Republic of Ireland and <a href=\"https:\/\/talksport.com\/sport\/football\/team\/113068\/germany\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Germany<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, Serena fared much better at Roland Garros, but only after switching up her Cameroon-inspired outfit.<\/p>\n<p>From the third round until the final, she wore a black and gold outfit with matching shoes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"US Serena Williams returns the ball to her sister and opponent Venus Williams, 08 June 2002 in Paris, during the Roland Garros French Open women's final match. I&#8217;m here to tell you that I&#8217;m evolving away from tennis, toward other things that are important to me.<\/p>\n<p>Sister Venus, meanwhile, is over 30 years into her WTA career, although during recent years she has been plagued by injury, particularly to her knee.<\/p>\n<p>However, the 44-year-old is still around the game, having still yet to official retire, <a href=\"https:\/\/talksport.com\/tennis\/3175142\/venus-williams-grand-slam-french-open-return-tnt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">serving as a broadcaster for TNT Sports at this year&#8217;s French Open<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Williams is on commentary duties alongside\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/talksport.com\/who\/andre-agassi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Andre Agassi<\/a>, Chris Evert, Jim Courier, Lindsay Davenport,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/talksport.com\/who\/john-mcenroe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John McEnroe<\/a>, and Caroline Wozniacki.<\/p>\n<p>This will be Williams&#8217; first major broadcasting role at a Slam since stepping back from full-time competition.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I know what it\u2019s like to battle on the clay, and I\u2019m looking forward to sharing that experience,\u201d Williams said in a press release.<\/p>\n<p>She has been watching the likes of Coco Gauff make a run, but <a href=\"https:\/\/talksport.com\/tennis\/3248211\/french-open-coco-gauff-roland-garros-serena-venus-williams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ruled out coaching her compatriot for one specific reason<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Serena Williams was a trailblazer on and off the court.
