Investment to pour into nuclear warheads, submarines and munitions to confront the \u2018most immediate threat since the Cold War\u2019.<\/p>\n
The United Kingdom has announced a major boost to its defence infrastructure to confront a \u201cnew era of threats\u201d driven by \u201cgrowing Russian aggression\u201d.<\/p>\n
The package, unveiled on Monday, includes huge investments in a nuclear warhead programme, a fleet of attack submarines and munitions factories and is part of a Strategic Defence Review that Prime Minister Keir Starmer said will shift the country to \u201cwar-fighting readiness\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cThe threat we now face is more serious, more immediate and more unpredictable than at any time since the Cold War,\u201d Starmer said as he delivered the review in Glasgow.<\/p>\n \u201cWe face war in Europe, new nuclear risks, daily cyberattacks, growing Russian aggression in our waters, menacing our skies,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n \u2018The front line is here\u2019<\/p>\n The defence review, the UK\u2019s first since 2021, was led by former NATO Secretary-General George Robertson.<\/p>\n Starmer said it would bring \u201cfundamental changes\u201d to the armed forces, including \u201cmoving to war-fighting readiness\u201d, recentring a \u201cNATO first\u201d defence posture and accelerating innovation.<\/p>\n \u201cEvery part of society, every citizen of this country, has a role to play because we have to recognise that things have changed in the world of today,\u201d he said. \u201cThe front line, if you like, is here.\u201d<\/p>\n The UK has been racing to rearm in the face of what it sees as a growing threat from Russia.
