{"id":152645,"date":"2025-06-02T17:30:25","date_gmt":"2025-06-02T17:30:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/152645\/"},"modified":"2025-06-02T17:30:25","modified_gmt":"2025-06-02T17:30:25","slug":"china-says-us-moves-on-computer-chips-and-student-visas-seriously-violate-tariffs-truce","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/152645\/","title":{"rendered":"China says US moves on computer chips and student visas &#8216;seriously violate&#8217; tariffs truce"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) \u2014 China criticized the U.S. on Monday over moves it alleged harmed Chinese interests, including issuing AI chip export control guidelines, stopping the sale of chip design software to China, and planning to revoke Chinese student visas. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese practices seriously violate the consensus,\u201d the Commerce Ministry said in a statement, referring to a China-U.S. joint statement in which the United States and <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/china\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">China<\/a> agreed to slash their massive <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/tariffs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent tariffs<\/a>, restarting stalled trade between the world\u2019s two biggest economies.<\/p>\n<p>But last month\u2019s de-escalation in <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-tariff-england-trade-war-e8300b457256d4c23d64928c09ce2b63\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">President Donald Trump\u2019s trade wars<\/a> did nothing to resolve underlying differences between Beijing and Washington and Monday\u2019s statement showed how easily such agreements can lead to further turbulence. <\/p>\n<p>The deal lasts 90 days, creating time for U.S. and Chinese negotiators to reach a more substantive agreement. But the pause also leaves tariffs higher than before <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-tariffs-liberation-day-2a031b3c16120a5672a6ddd01da09933\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump started ramping them up<\/a> last month. And businesses and investors must contend with uncertainty about whether the truce will last.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-cabinet-trade-tariffs-jamieson-greer-bea3dc531f06ea1bd134f003f51581a1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer<\/a> said the U.S. agreed to drop the 145% tax Trump imposed last month to 30%. China agreed to lower its tariff rate on U.S. goods to 10% from 125%.<\/p>\n<p>The Commerce Ministry said China held up its end of the deal, canceling or suspending tariffs and non-tariff measures taken against the U.S. \u201creciprocal tariffs\u201d following the agreement. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe United States has unilaterally provoked new economic and trade frictions, exacerbating the uncertainty and instability of bilateral economic and trade relations,\u201d while China has stood by its commitments, the statement said. <\/p>\n<p>It also threatened unspecified retaliation, saying China will \u201ccontinue to take resolute and forceful measures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump stirred further controversy Friday, saying he will no longer be nice with <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-tariffs-whats-next-2d597284774fddd6ad9fa4f60e783d34\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">China on trade<\/a>, declaring in a social media post that the country had broken an agreement with the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Hours later, Trump said in the Oval Office that he will <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/china-united-states-trump-xi-jinping-diplomacy-3d476906422ba9749641c82979f67c28\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">speak with Chinese President Xi Jinping<\/a> and \u201chopefully we\u2019ll work that out,\u201d while still insisting China had violated the agreement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bad news is that China, perhaps not surprisingly to some, HAS TOTALLY VIOLATED ITS AGREEMENT WITH US,\u201d Trump posted. \u201cSo much for being Mr. NICE GUY!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In response to recent comments by Trump, the Commerce Ministry said of the U.S.: \u201cInstead of reflecting on itself, it has turned the tables and unreasonably accused China of violating the consensus, which is seriously contrary to the facts.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said that the Chinese were \u201cjust slow rolling the deal\u201d from Geneva. <\/p>\n<p>Appearing on Fox News on Sunday, Lutnick said the U.S. was \u201ctaking certain actions to show them what it feels like on the other side of that equation,\u201d adding that Trump would \u201cwork it out\u201d with Xi.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration also stepped up the clash with China in other ways last week, announcing that it would start <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/international-students-visas-trump-guidance-social-media-a1f5180ce83560aff66dd65534906697\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">revoking visas for Chinese students<\/a> studying in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. campuses host more than 275,000 students from China.<\/p>\n<p>Both countries are in a race to develop advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, with Washington seeking to curb China\u2019s access to the most advanced computer chips.
