{"id":152996,"date":"2025-06-02T20:37:09","date_gmt":"2025-06-02T20:37:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/152996\/"},"modified":"2025-06-02T20:37:09","modified_gmt":"2025-06-02T20:37:09","slug":"200m-win-for-uk-consumers-as-fresh-produce-avoids-brexit-border-chaos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/152996\/","title":{"rendered":"\u00a3200m win for UK consumers as fresh produce avoids Brexit border chaos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UK Government has confirmed that planned post-Brexit border checks on medium-risk fruit and vegetables from the EU will now be delayed until 31 January 2027 \u2013\u00a0a victory secured solely by the Fresh Produce Consortium (FPC) after years of lobbying and media pressure.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The move spares the industry from 700k consignments annually subject to UK SPS (sanitary &amp; phytosanitary) border controls and avoids an eye-watering \u00a3200 million in added costs \u2013 savings that will directly benefit UK consumers already struggling with the cost of living.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is a unique and sector-specific exemption, and one we\u2019ve fought long and hard to achieve,\u201d said Nigel Jenney, Chief Executive of the Fresh Produce Consortium (FPC). \u201cWe\u2019re proud to have secured a common-sense solution that protects our diverse and critical industry\u2013 from supermarket supply chains to the thousands of SMEs in wholesale and foodservice.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without this reprieve, the fresh produce industry would have faced significant operational upheaval and extra costs due to new sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) checks due to begin on 1 July 2025 under the UK\u2019s Border Target Operating Model (BTOM).\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, the Government has extended the current easement to align with the end of the UK\u2019s Transitional Staging Period (TSP). The delay also allows breathing room while the UK and EU negotiate a new SPS agreement \u2013 a process widely expected to take months, if not years.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crucially, this means that fruit and vegetables will also remain **exempt from the Common User Charge (CUC)** when entering via the Port of Dover and the Eurotunnel \u2013 a huge benefit for importers using these major entry points.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jenney added: \u201cWe thank our members for their backing \u2013 especially those who took a public stance or lobbied Ministers directly.
