But the technology\u2019s limitations could curb its grand vision.<\/p>\n<p>Generative AI \u2013 which creates content based on a user\u2019s request \u2013 burst into the zeitgeist in late 2022 when Microsoft-backed <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/chatgpt-and-other-generative-ais?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"noopener\">OpenAI launched ChatGPT<\/a>, a conversational chatbot that could take a simple request and generate anything from a limerick to a college essay.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Less than three years later, Microsoft has a plan to move beyond ChatGPT and its copycats by creating the foundation for a new version of the internet.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Microsoft calls it the \u201copen agentic web\u201d, with users sending AI-powered \u201cagents\u201d out into the void to do their bidding.
