A deal needs to be struck with Brentford.

United In Focus understands via transfer insider Graeme Bailey that Brentford want ‘Matheus Cunha’ money to sell Bryan Mbeumo.

Manchester United agreed to pay £62.5 million for Cunha, and Brentford believe a precedent has been set, arguing that Mbeumo had a more prolific year.

Mbeumo scored 20 Premier League goals in 38 starts, with a further seven assists. Cunha netted 17 goals in all competitions, and 15 in the league, with six assists.

Mbeumo averaged a goal or assist every 128 minutes in all competitions, data via Sofascore for the 2024/25 season shows.

United In Focus previously reported on United opening talks with Mbeumo’s representatives, with figures at United impressed by his analytics.

.Brentford uncertainty backdrop to deal

There is some uncertainty at Brentford at present regarding their manager, with Thomas Frank subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur.

This has not prevented them selling players, however, with Erik ten Hag moving to sign Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken for Bayer Leverkusen.

The drawback of that £8 million deal is it strengthens Brentford’s finances, and means they are not under financial pressure to take a cheap deal from United for Mbeumo.

The advantage for United is that Mbeumo has indicated he wants to move to Old Trafford, and could resist other potential deals.

If United are able to get a deal done for closer to £50 million than £60 million, the negotiating will have been a success.

With the Cunha deal, a move for Mbeumo would wipe out most of United’s budget, and leave the club reliant on sales to fund further moves.

Manchester United are now leading the race to sign Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo.
