{"id":153252,"date":"2025-06-02T22:51:11","date_gmt":"2025-06-02T22:51:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/153252\/"},"modified":"2025-06-02T22:51:11","modified_gmt":"2025-06-02T22:51:11","slug":"farmers-tragic-death-sparks-inheritance-tax-outrage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/153252\/","title":{"rendered":"Farmer\u2019s tragic death sparks inheritance tax outrage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Labour government is facing growing outrage from farmers and opposition MPs after a coroner ruled that 78-year-old Yorkshire farmer Philip (John) Charlesworth took his own life because of fears over the party\u2019s looming inheritance tax changes.<\/p>\n<p>The Charlesworth family, who have farmed the land at Silkstone near Barnsley for generations, say the \u201cvindictive\u201d plan to impose inheritance tax (IHT) on family farms from April 2026 pushed their father over the edge.<\/p>\n<p>In a harrowing inquest at Sheffield Coroner\u2019s Court on 29 May, coroner Tanyka Rawden concluded that Mr Charlesworth\u2019s suicide in October 2024 was directly linked to his fear that Labour\u2019s IHT reforms would force the family to sell half their farm.<\/p>\n<p>See also: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fwi.co.uk\/business\/business-management\/tax\/delay-farm-tax-raid-or-risk-rural-ruin-mps-warn-labour\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Delay farm tax raid or risk rural ruin, MPs warn Labour<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was worried about implications of new regulations around IHT that would see the family lose 50% of the farm, taking his life the day before the changes were due to be announced,\u201d the coroner said.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Rawden concluded Mr Charlesworth took his own life, as reported by the BBC.<\/p>\n<p>Philip\u2019s son, Jonathan, 47, found his father dead in the barn on 29 October last year, the night before Rachel Reeves delivered her Autumn Budget.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to GB News after the inquest verdict, he said: \u201cIn the couple of months before it happened, the only thing he talked about was IHT.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wasn\u2019t going to let the government beat him\u2026 If it hadn\u2019t been for worries about IHT, he would still be here today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He urged the government to at the very least suspend implementation of the tax until a full impact assessment is carried out.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Caring man\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Philip Charlesworth wasn\u2019t just a farmer. He was a husband caring for his dementia-stricken wife, a grandfather of six, and a respected community member who \u201calways had time for people\u201d, his daughter Verity said.<\/p>\n<p>She described a man who loved the land, never left the farm for long, and wanted his ashes scattered across the fields he had spent a lifetime cultivating.<\/p>\n<p>Verity\u2019s final message to the government was simple: \u201cProtect our farmers. Respect their contribution. Recognise their struggle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The inquest heard that Philip left behind instructions for how to protect the farm from a tax bill his family said could have exceeded \u00a31m.<\/p>\n<p>The changes \u2013 set to come into force in April 2026 \u2013 would subject farm assets above \u00a31m to a 20% tax on death, even for family-run operations that pass the farm down to children.<\/p>\n<p>Renewed calls for a pause<\/p>\n<p>The NFU expressed sympathy with Mr Charlesworth\u2019s family and renewed its call for the government to reconsider its IHT plans.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, the union said its \u201cthoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the family of Mr Charlesworth\u201d and confirmed it had \u201crepeatedly asked ministers to think again about the human impact of this policy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson added: \u201cWhatever our differences on the family farm tax policy, we have repeatedly said to the government that we don\u2019t believe it intended this policy to have the invidious effect it has had on elderly farmers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the past ten months, both publicly and privately, we have repeatedly called for this government to think again about the human impact of this policy \u2013 and act.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Liberal Democrat MP Alistair Carmichael, who chairs the cross-party Environment, Food and Rural Affairs committee, called Mr Charlesworth\u2019s death \u201cheartbreaking\u201d and reiterated his committee\u2019s joint call for Labour to pause and rethink the tax changes.<\/p>\n<p>Conservative MPs outraged<\/p>\n<p>The response from opposition MPs and farming groups has also been swift and fierce.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is absolutely devastating news,\u201d wrote Victoria Atkins, MP for Louth and Horncastle, on X.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeir Starmer, Rachel Reeves and Steve Reed must reflect on this decision and ensure no more families are put through this pain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shadow farming minister Robbie Moore called the case \u201cjust horrific\u201d, adding: \u201cWe have repeatedly called on this vindictive Labour government to listen. To stop. To reverse their reckless actions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He asked: \u201cWhat more will it take for this Labour government to wake up and realise the catastrophic consequences their decisions are having?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Farmers\u2019 protest group Farmers To Action issued a scathing statement, saying: \u201cBlood on their hands. A man is dead because of political pressure. A family lost their father. A community lost a man of the land.
