{"id":153500,"date":"2025-06-03T01:00:10","date_gmt":"2025-06-03T01:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/153500\/"},"modified":"2025-06-03T01:00:10","modified_gmt":"2025-06-03T01:00:10","slug":"wiegman-wont-risk-players-against-spain-ahead-of-euro-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/153500\/","title":{"rendered":"Wiegman won&#8217;t risk players against Spain ahead of Euro 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vavel.com\/en\/football\/2025\/05\/27\/womens-football\/1224099-mary-earps-announces-lionesses-retirement.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sarina Wiegman<\/a><\/strong> says she won\u2019t risk any of her players in the Women\u2019s Nations League as she looks ahead to the 2025 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vavel.com\/en\/football\/2024\/11\/21\/womens-football\/1205061-sarina-wiegman-forced-to-experiment-amid-england-injury-woes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Championships<\/a><\/strong> in Switzerland.<\/p>\n<p>The Lionesses face Spain in their final Nations League Group A3 game after thrashing Portugal 6-0 at Wembley on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>And although a strong side is required to overcome the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vavel.com\/en\/football\/2025\/04\/09\/womens-football\/1219815-four-things-we-learnt-from-wales-1-1-draw-in-sweden.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Cup<\/a><\/strong> winners, Wiegman insists she won\u2019t risk any players if they show signs of injury.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf a player has little injury and would be a risk for the Euros then I wouldn\u2019t play her, that\u2019s the difference,&#8221; she said. &#8220;We are going to do everything to win that game.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to perform and in February we had a tie with Portugal and a win against Spain. In April we had a good performance against Belgium. Tomorrow, Spain is a totally different game than what we had on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDifferent opponents. We started really well against Portugal and it really helped we scored two goals in five minutes. Of course, we are aware Spain is the highest level imaginable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vavel.com\/en\/football\/2025\/05\/15\/womens-football\/1223243-domestic-treble-would-be-a-really-good-season-not-a-perfect-one-says-sonia-bompastor-ahead-of-fa-cup-final.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lauren James<\/a><\/strong> missed out on a call-up through injury but Wiegman gave an update, saying: \u201cWe already said we\u2019re trying together to get her fit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s trying to get fit with all the support from Chelsea and us. She is doing really well. She needs to tick some boxes and progress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need her to be fit and healthy and perform at her highest level \u2014 I\u2019m pretty sure that\u2019ll work for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kelly &#8216;very happy and energetic&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vavel.com\/en\/football\/2025\/04\/30\/womens-football\/1221959-man-united-0-1-chelsea-lucy-bronze-winner-secures-sixth-straight-wsl-title-for-blues.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aggie Beever-Jones<\/a><\/strong> was the standout against Portugal by scoring a 30-minute hat-trick, but so too was <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vavel.com\/en\/football\/2025\/03\/26\/womens-football\/1218336-arsenal-women-3-3-0-2-real-madrid-femenino-gunners-dominance-ensures-comeback.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chloe Kelly,<\/a><\/strong> who scored after being on the pitch for just four minutes.<\/p>\n<p>The Arsenal forward had struggled throughout the most recent Women\u2019s Super League season, and found difficulty in getting minutes at <b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vavel.com\/en\/data\/manchester-city\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Manchester City<\/a><\/b> before her return to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vavel.com\/en\/football\/2025\/06\/01\/arsenal\/1224519-arsenal-transfer-roundup-sesko-sane-and-zubimendi-latest.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">North London.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But under <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vavel.com\/en\/football\/2025\/05\/24\/womens-football\/1223923-renee-slegers-arsenal-want-to-win-trophies.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Renee Slegers,<\/a><\/strong> Kelly has flourished and has even won the Women\u2019s Champions League which will certainly motivate her to fight for a place in Wiegman\u2019s team in Switzerland this summer.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Kelly scored only four minutes after coming on against Portugal on Friday (Photo by Molly Darlington - The FA\/Getty Images)\" height=\"498\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/gettyimages-2217867151-2048x2048.jpg\" width=\"747\"\/><br \/>\nKelly scored only four minutes after coming on against Portugal on Friday (Photo by Molly Darlington &#8211; The FA\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe most of all is that she is very happy, very energetic,&#8221; said Wiegman. &#8220;Going to Arsenal having great performances I think she has improved again in possession and also out of possession.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s enjoyable to watch her, she came on for us as a finisher [against Portugal] and straight did well again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope that continues as she is enjoying herself. She trains really well, with a smile on her face. Whether she is starting or coming from the bench, she is doing everything she can to get her performance at the highest level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are plenty of positives to take from this England camp but one downside is the loss of <b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vavel.com\/en\/data\/manchester-united\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Manchester United<\/a><\/b> midfielder <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vavel.com\/en\/football\/2025\/05\/04\/womens-football\/1222309-man-united-2-2-man-city-malard-seals-champions-league-return-in-derby-draw.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grace Clinton<\/a><\/strong> after she picked up an accumulation of yellow cards.<\/p>\n<p>Wiegman understands the void that her absence will create but is forward-thinking in her approach to Tuesday\u2019s game, where the winner, if there is one, will finish at the top of Group A3.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a disappointment,\u201d said Wiegman. \u201cIt was an unlucky moment because she plays with a lot of intensity and is very aggressive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe can\u2019t play tomorrow so that\u2019s a fact, we are moving on with the team we have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The England manager spoke highly of her players ahead of the clash and gave positive updates on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vavel.com\/en\/football\/2025\/03\/08\/womens-football\/1216212-marc-skinner-we-want-to-get-back-to-wembley.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ella Toone<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vavel.com\/en\/football\/2025\/03\/07\/womens-football\/1216027-we-want-to-make-it-15-renee-slegers-wants-arsenal-to-add-to-trophy-haul-ahead-of-liverpool-fa-cup-clash-on-sunday.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alessia Russo<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; who are both fit to start.<\/p>\n<p>Wiegman is yet to pick her squad for the European Champions, which England will act as the tournament&#8217;s holders, and says that players trying to impress is \u201chard\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>She added: \u201cYou come close to squad selection.
