It is not for use by other media.<\/p>\n<p>After meeting with a therapist with <a href=\"http:\/\/providentliving.churchofjesuschrist.org\/lds-family-services?lang=eng\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Family Services<\/a> for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Brittany Westover said she had more confidence in herself and her ability to regulate her emotions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mental health is now the best it has ever been,\u201d she said. \u201cI feel like I can handle my emotions. Professional counselors who work with Family Services are aligned with gospel principles, and they use a solution-focused therapy model to focus on issues that interfere with the ability to make and keep sacred covenants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thechurchnews.com\/podcast\/2023\/5\/23\/23734980\/episode-137-family-services-commissioner-lds-mental-emotional-health\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thechurchnews.com\/podcast\/2023\/5\/23\/23734980\/episode-137-family-services-commissioner-lds-mental-emotional-health\/\">Sherilyn C. Stinson<\/a>, commissioner of Family Services for the Church, said they are seeing growth and acceptance of the Emotional Resilience course throughout the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThis has just been a wonderful opportunity to normalize emotional distress and to provide hope,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Stinson said emotional resilience \u2014 and self-reliance in general \u2014 is an eternal principle found throughout the scriptures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWe recognize that obstacles of emotional, mental, behavioral health can really be obstacles to recognizing [one\u2019s] identity,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The following is a sampling of recent articles in the Church News, showing how people around the world are utilizing resources from the Church to overcome those emotional, mental and behavioral obstacles and grow closer to the Savior in the process.<\/p>\n<p>Strengthening Marriage Course<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Couples in Lome, Togo, who have participated in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/topics\/family\/strengthening-marriages-and-families?lang=eng\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Strengthening Marriage<\/a> course from the Church said they were delighted to have taken part.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI believe that you are never finished learning, and I learned a lot in this class,\u201d said Folly Mikpeayevo.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Togo-Strengthen-Families\" data-downloadable=\"true\" data-media-id=\"8878625694268905062\" data-site=\"ghana\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Togo-3.jpg\" \/>Togo-Strengthen-FamiliesPierette and Folly Mikpeayevo at the Strengthen Families celebration in Lome, Togo, on February 17, 2024.2025 by Intellectual Reserve, Inc. All rights reserved.Download Photo<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He and his wife, Pierette, were among 27 couples from the Lome Togo Agoe Stake who became the first in the West African country to participate in the course.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Subjects included applying the principles of the gospel in marriage, promoting equality and unity, communicating with love, overcoming anger, resolving conflict and enriching marriages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/bc\/content\/shared\/content\/english\/pdf\/language-materials\/36888_eng.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Strengthening Marriage<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/bc\/content\/shared\/content\/english\/pdf\/language-materials\/36612_eng.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Strengthening the Family<\/a> courses can help couples enrich their marriage relationship and improve their skills in parenting. Manuals can be ordered by ward or branch \u2014 or a PDF version of each can be found online by searching <a href=\"http:\/\/churchofjesuschrist.org\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ChurchofJesusChrist.org<\/a> for the course name. The resources are available in several languages, including French, the official language of Togo.<\/p>\n<p>Embracing Mental Health in West Africa<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Church leaders and members in the Africa West Area of the Church are embracing principles of self-reliance, mental health and emotional resilience, thanks to more open conversations around these topics and trainings from Family Services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Tamara Esi Dadson, a Family Services agency manager in the area, often travels throughout West Africa to help Church leaders understand the emotional health needs of the members they serve. She also helps these leaders access mental health resources to support themselves and their wards and stakes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Dadson said she is also seeing many members of the Church get the help they need as their leaders have embraced the principles Dadson and other Family Services employees are teaching.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cMembers feel like \u2018I don\u2018t have to hide. I can go to my leader and talk to him, because he talks about it in sacrament meeting.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Learning Emotional Resilience<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Darleen Nulty, the Plainview New York Stake Relief Society president, attended a \u201cFinding Strength in the Lord: Emotional Resilience\u201d course online for 10 weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Each meeting included spiritual principles and lessons from the manual and discussions led by a facilitator.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Nulty learned how to relate better to others and to tolerate people\u2019s feelings. She also learned how important it was to take care of herself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI saw things from their perspective,\u201d she said. \u201c I thought I was resilient in my emotions, but I learned how lacking I was in emotional resilience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Addiction Recovery Program<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Earlier this year, the Church updated the name of the program that helps people struggling with or affected by addictions. The new name, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/study\/manual\/addiction-recovery-program-2023?lang=eng&amp;cid=arp_hts_newsroom_article_2024\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Healing through the Savior: The Addiction Recovery Program<\/a>,\u201d reflects the healing many participants have experienced as they\u2019ve turned to the Savior, Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Scott and Melissa Harker both participated in the program as he worked to overcome a pornography addiction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI know that it works,\u201d said Scott Harker. \u201cTurning your life to Jesus Christ, that\u2019s one part of the gospel that I know is 100%, because I experienced it, and so that became a strength in my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Melissa Harker said the experience not only helped her husband but helped her experience the Savior\u2019s healing power.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cIt took a lot of work,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd then I was able to be more vulnerable with him, and forgiveness just came as part of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2025 Deseret News Publishing Company.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"This story appears here courtesy of TheChurchNews.com.
