Donald Trump<\/a> snubbed Rory McIlroy<\/a> over the weekend as he named the two best golfers in the world – and failed to mention the recent Masters champion.<\/p>\n

McIlroy, who played a practice round with the president’s granddaughter, Kai, in February, recently acknowledged that the president could be ‘influential’ for golf after he met with Tiger Woods<\/a>, PGA commissioner Jay Monahan, player director Adam Scott<\/a> and members of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund<\/a>\u00a0at the White House.<\/p>\n

But when it comes to golf’s top dogs, Trump has a clear pairing in mind: MAGA-supporting Bryson DeChambeau and Scottie Scheffler<\/a>.<\/p>\n

‘He’s probably the No. 1 golfer now,’ Trump said from Trump National Golf Club in DC<\/a> of DeChambeau. ‘Him and Scottie are rated the top.’<\/p>\n

In fact, McIlroy is second after Scheffler – following his memorable Masters win<\/a> in April – while DeChambeau is 10th.<\/p>\n

Nonetheless, the long-hitting golfer and Trump enjoyed some time together over the weekend, as the pair hit the course before DeChambeau visited the White House<\/a>.<\/p>\n

‘We play golf a lot together, it’s not a very pleasant experience for me because I always consider myself a reasonably long hitter,’ Trump said from his DC course.<\/p>\n

‘… My wife says, ‘Are you as long as Bryson?’ I say, ‘Yeah sorta, pretty close –\u00a0 it’s not close.’<\/p>\n

Two-time US Open winner DeChambeau has been a vocal supporter and ally of president’s in recent years, as the golfer invited him onto his YouTube channel last year<\/a>.<\/p>\n

DeChambeau was also on hand last November as Trump celebrated his presidential victory in Florida, as Trump summoned him to join him onstage<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Trump has become involved in golf’s civil war, as he hosted PGA leaders and the PIF at the White House earlier this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And McIlroy – who has previously been critical of Trump, praised the president’s influence after the meeting.\u00a0<\/p>\n

‘The President, he can do a lot of things… he has direct access to Yasir’s boss,’ McIlroy said, speaking about PIF governor\u00a0Yasir Al-Rumayyan.<\/p>\n

‘Not many people have that. Not many people can say, ‘I want you to get this deal done, and by the way, I’m speaking to your boss, I’m going to tell him the same thing.’ There’s a few things that he can do. He can be influential.’<\/p>\n

McIlroy also played golf with Trump in January and said they had a ‘good discussion’\u00a0<\/p>\n

‘I learnt that he’s not a fan of the LIV [Golf] format,’ McIlroy shared\u00a0after his Genesis Invitational pro-am.<\/p>\n

Trump has enjoyed a chummy relationship with golf star DeChambeau in recent years<\/p>\n

‘I was like, ‘But you’ve hosted their events.’ He was like, ‘Yeah, but it doesn’t mean that I like it.’ So, I think he’s on the Tour’s side.’<\/p>\n

However, Northern Irishman McIlroy –\u00a0 a longtime resident of the US – has been critical of Trump in the past.<\/p>\n

In 2020, he suggested that he didn’t share his views, and criticized his behavior during his first presidential term.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0‘There’s some stuff that just is terrible,’ he said. ‘It’s not the way a leader should act. There is a bit of diplomacy that you need to show, and I just don’t think he’s showing that, especially in these times.<\/p>\n
