\n\u201cI would have liked to go home with more, of course, but in
\nGrand Tours it’s so incredibly difficult to get it all done, whether you’re
\ngoing for a stage or the GC,\u201d Pidcock told In de Leiderstrui <\/a>on the
\nfinal day in Rome. \u201cBut I do think this was my strongest Grand Tour that I’ve
\nridden. I did quite well.\u201d<\/p>\n

It might have been better. His best shot at a stage win, the
\ngravel Stage 9 to Siena, was derailed by a crash. Then, a tactical
\nmiscalculation on Stage 19, under intense heat, led to his biggest time loss of
\nthe race.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe tank was not empty, no,\u201d Pidcock explained. \u201cI tried to
\njoin the breakaway in stage 19, but blew myself up completely in the heat. That
\nwasn’t very smart, on a day that was suddenly very hot and I know that I
\nusually don’t adapt to those conditions very quickly. So that wasn’t a good
\nidea. Because of that action, I lose my chance of a top ten.\u201d<\/p>\n

He eventually lost around 18 minutes that day, a gap he was
\nnever able to recover. On Stage 20, there was little left to fight for.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn stage 20 there was not much more to gain for me, also
\nbecause it was my very first time doing a climb of an hour.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Pidcock had ambitions of a stronger showing, he
\nacknowledged that his build-up to the race may not have been ideal, \u201cTo be
\nhonest, I was more ambitious for the Giro than what I have shown now,\u201d he
\nadmitted.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut with the preparation I have had, without a real
\naltitude training camp after the Ardennes classics, I perhaps could not have
\nexpected more.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also noted that his rivals came into the race fresher and
\nbetter prepared, \u201cAll the men before me had a better preparation, with fewer
\nracing days.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for what comes next, Pidcock won\u2019t be riding the Tour de
\nFrance this summer, instead setting his sights on the Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a, where he
\nhopes to arrive in better shape and better conditions.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will hopefully be able to prepare myself more
\nspecifically towards the Vuelta,\u201d he said. \u201cWith a bit of mountain biking in
