Queen Margrethe of Denmark has made a rare solo appearance just weeks after she was rushed to hospital and missed several engagements. <\/p>\n

The 85-year-old former monarch stepped out as she visited Sofieskolen, a school specialising for children with autism for which she has been a patron since 1964. <\/p>\n

Margrethe was hospitalised from May 8 to May 10 after contracting \u201ca cold\u201d and was admitted for the purpose of \u201cobservation as a precaution\u201d. <\/p>\n

\u201cHer Majesty is well and is now back in her residence at Fredensborg Palace,\u201d the Danish royal family later announced. <\/p>\n

The former monarch was seen alongside other Danish royals as they stood on the Palace balcony as part of her son King Frederik\u2019s 57th birthday celebrations. <\/p>\n

Now, the former monarch has embarked on a solo visit to support one of her most treasured causes. <\/p>\n

She was attending the Sofieskolen in the Copenhagen suburb of Bagsv\u00e6rd as students had prepared an exhibition with the theme: \u201cA royal universe\u201d. <\/p>\n

In a post documenting her trip, the Danish Palace said she: \u201cExperienced the many creative works that the students had created with inspiration from Her Majesty’s artistic work, the royal family and the royals castles\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe opening marked the end of a theme week, where the students have worked with both history, architecture and art.”<\/p>\n

\u201cHer Majesty Queen Margrethe has been the patron of the Sofieskolen since 1968. The school was founded as the first special school for children with autism in the Nordic countries and today has around 60 students,\u201d the statement concluded. <\/p>\n

The post included several pictures of Margrethe beaming as she met students and toured the school. <\/p>\n

She was seen grinning as a boy blew bubbles next to her and a girl handed her a sweet bouquet of flowers. <\/p>\n

Queen Margrethe also observed the children taking part in arts and crafts, including making crowns and Hama bead sculptures. <\/p>\n

In a touching gesture, the children had also a knitted doll of Margrethe. <\/p>\n

The former monarch has been thrown back into royal duties after returning from her hospital trip. <\/p>\n

She filled in the role as regent, ruling in the current monarch\u2019s absence, while King Frederik and his family went on holiday for his birthday. <\/p>\n

According to normal royal protocol, 19-year-old Crown Prince Christian should have fulfilled the regent role but could not as he also accompanied his parents on the trip. <\/p>\n

King Frederik returned to his royal duties on Monday, beginning with daily audiences.<\/p>\n

The formerly reigning Danish Queen was Europe’s longest serving monarch following the death of Queen Elizabeth.<\/p>\n

She had ruled the small northern European nation since 1972, marking 52 years on the throne before her abdication in 2024. <\/p>\n
