Now, teens account for almost a third of positive knife searches across all age groups.<\/p>\n<p>The disturbing incidents prompted warnings of a \u201cyouth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edinburghlive.co.uk\/all-about\/crime\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:violence;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">violence <\/a>epidemic\u201d which has been repeatedly highlighted by the Record&#8217;s Our Kids&#8230; Our Future campaign, launched two years ago after we reported a worrying series of attacks on teens across the country.<\/p>\n<p><b>Sign up for<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edinburghlive.co.uk\/newsletter-preference-centre\/?view=Solus&amp;mailingListId=52589817-5145-4bda-812c-35c36c95fb08&amp;utm_source=solusarticle\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Edinburgh Live newsletters;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"> <b> Edinburgh Live newsletters <\/b> <\/a> <b>for more headlines straight to your inbox<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The Scottish Government is now under intensified pressure onto act after several high-profile cases.<\/p>\n<p>Labour justice spokesperson Pauline McNeill said: \u201cThese shocking figures are yet another sign that there is a youth violence epidemic emerging in Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The SNP has created a perfect storm by cutting youth work services, letting police numbers fall, and mismanaging mental health and education.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Every one of these 91 cases is very serious for our communities and potentially for those actually carrying the weapon.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The only way to tackle this effectively is to have early intervention schemes that get to the root cause.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Scottish Conservatives blamed \u201csoft-touch\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edinburghlive.co.uk\/all-about\/crime\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:sentencing;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">sentencing <\/a>for under-25s, claiming it has emboldened young offenders.<\/p>\n<p>Sharon Dowey MSP said: \u201cKnife crime has spiralled out of control. There must be meaningful punishments for those who use a knife and expanded stop-and-search powers for police to act as a deterrent.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The SNP\u2019s soft-touch attitude towards justice represents an abject dereliction of duty by John Swinney\u2019s government.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Scottish Police Federation chair, David Threadgold, added: &#8220;This is a concerning societal trend we now see emerging among younger members of our communities in Scotland,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach of these statistics is a real situation which created significant risk for my colleagues, as well as potentially life changing consequences for the perpetrator, and sadly, the victims of knife crime, their families and friends.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe solution to this problem cannot rest alone with the police; much greater and more effective preventative strategies have to be in place.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>First Minister John Swinney recently said the Government&#8217;s strategy would focus on three steps \u2013 educating young people on the dangers of knives, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edinburghlive.co.uk\/all-about\/crime\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:police;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">police <\/a>searches of people who they think may be carrying a knife and punishment of those caught with weapons.<\/p>\n<p>A Scottish Government spokesperson said: \u201cStop and search powers should be used where lawful, necessary and proportionate.
