{"id":155149,"date":"2025-06-03T15:46:17","date_gmt":"2025-06-03T15:46:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/155149\/"},"modified":"2025-06-03T15:46:17","modified_gmt":"2025-06-03T15:46:17","slug":"the-mancunian-way-a-big-f-off-wheel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/155149\/","title":{"rendered":"The Mancunian Way: \u2018A big f***-off wheel\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Could a new landmark rival the Angel of the North?<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/0_imagemaker-23.jpg\" loading=\"eager\"  \/><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Hello,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">When it was recently revealed that two thirds of children are living in poverty in a Greater Manchester suburb, I wanted to find out why.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">In the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/oldham\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Oldham<\/a> suburb of Coldhurst, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/greater-manchester-news\/neighbourhood-two-thirds-kids-live-31469581\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">66 per cent of children were living in poverty<\/a> in the year ending March 2024 &#8211; a total of 2,676 children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Just 13 other areas in the entire UK had a higher proportion of children living in poverty, according to the latest figures from the Department of Work and Pensions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Viewed alone, the statistics look harsh. So I was keen to understand the people behind the numbers.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/1748965571_850_1_Coldhurst-community-day-United-Kingdom-Oldham-Coldhurst-community-day-coldhurst-community.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The children of Coldhurst enjoy a magic trick during a community party(Image: Jake Lindley \/ Manchester Evening News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">I contacted Sadrul Alam, treasurer of the community group My Coldhurst, and he immediately invited the Manchester Evening News to a bank holiday community day to celebrate Coldhurst and its people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Over the course of several weeks, Sadrul helped me understand what it is like to live in Coldhurst, to have grown up there and to raise a family there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">He explained, with great pride and enthusiasm, why he loved his area so much. And he told me about the work of a dedicated band of volunteers who are helping locals negate the effects of austerity, the pandemic and two child benefit cap.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">They clean the streets of rubbish, provide youth activities and replace public services that are so desperately needed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">And one of the greatest balms in these difficult times is food. It\u2019s shared during the community fun days and after MMA and football classes for local children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">So when Sadrul saw his neighbour Rohima Chowdhury enjoying a traditional Bengali meal on their street with her neighbours, he asked the ladies of St Hilda\u2019s Road and the surrounding streets if they would do it again.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/1_Coldhurst-community-day-United-Kingdom-Oldham-Coldhurst-community-day-coldhurst-community.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Families from across Coldhurst, one of the most deprived communities in Greater Manchester, enjoy a community day each summer. Throughout the year volunteers work to provide youth work, food parcels and community days(Image: Jake Lindley \/ Manchester Evening News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Last month they set up huge pots of curry and biryani, cooking them in the street and sharing it across the neighbourhood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The picture Sadrul and Rohima painted of Coldhurst is one of a community battling the same challenges faced by so many across the country. But they gave real insight into the families working hard to maintain civic pride and, crucially, make their children happy and successful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/greater-manchester-news\/the-statistics-bad-were-proud-31743719\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">You can read the full story here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">\u2018What do I do?\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A couple of weeks ago we told you about <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/greater-manchester-news\/in-33-years-living-here-31555572\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">the Oldham neighbours battling a crippling rent hike<\/a> which they feared could leave them homeless.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Local democracy reporter Charlotte Hall spent weeks speaking to the residents of Gilderdale Close, in Shaw, who are arguing with their landlord Places for People Homes Limited about their status.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/0_220525napierrent4.jpg\" alt=\"Rachael Jelley is worried she won't be able to afford her home if she's classed as a private tenant. \" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Rachael Jelley is worried she won&#8217;t be able to afford her home if she&#8217;s classed as a private tenant. (Image: Manchester Evening News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The housing association say they\u2019ve always been &#8216;private\u2019 renters and they want to bring their housing stock in Shaw \u2018up to market value rates\u2019. But the tenants say they are under \u2018assured\/secure tenancy\u2019 contracts, making them immune to rent hikes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Now Charlotte has spoken to Rachael Jelley &#8211; who worries her children could \u2018end up on the streets\u2019 for the same reason.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWhen they go to bed, I sit downstairs on my own and I think: What do I do?\u201d Rachael said. \u201cHow am I supposed to look after the kids if I don\u2019t even know if I\u2019m going to be safe in this house?
