New research suggests it might not even be the best choice for reaching your weight-loss goals. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"3\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">A study, which was published in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa2416394\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa2416394\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"The New England Journal of Medicine,\" data-node-id=\"3.1.0\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">The New England Journal of Medicine,<\/a> found that tirzepatide (Zepbound) is more effective for weight loss in a head-to-head trial with semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy). It&#8217;s important to point out that the study was funded by the company that makes Zepbound. But experts aren&#8217;t surprised by the findings. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"4\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Of course, if you\u2019re interested in taking a weight-loss medication, it\u2019s fair to wonder if Zepbound might be a better choice. Here\u2019s what the study found, plus what a weight-loss doctor wants people to keep in mind when taking in this new information. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"6\" class=\"body-tip css-13fzjfi emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"6.0\">Meet the expert:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.memorialcare.org\/providers\/mir-b-ali\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.memorialcare.org\/providers\/mir-b-ali\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Mir Ali\" data-node-id=\"6.2\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong data-node-id=\"6.2.0\">Mir Ali<\/strong><\/a>, MD, is a medical director of MemorialCare Surgical Weight Loss Center at Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley, CA <\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"7.0\">What did the study find?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">For the study, researchers had 751 people with obesity (but without type 2 diabetes) take either the maximum tolerated dose of tirzepatide or the maximum tolerated dose of semaglutide once a week for 72 weeks. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">At the end of the 72 weeks, people who took tirzepatide lost an average of 50 pounds or about 20.2 percent of their body weight. Participants who took semaglutide lost an average of 33 pounds or 13.7 percent of their body weight.
