{"id":155588,"date":"2025-06-03T19:33:12","date_gmt":"2025-06-03T19:33:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/155588\/"},"modified":"2025-06-03T19:33:12","modified_gmt":"2025-06-03T19:33:12","slug":"missed-chances-in-bethan-james-sepsis-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/155588\/","title":{"rendered":"Missed chances in Bethan James sepsis death"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1748533035_713_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-d1200759-0 dkIvM hide-when-no-script\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/74e1a870-4081-11f0-a90d-79ba88a72a56.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"eager\" alt=\"Steve James A blonde woman smiles at camera wearing a black top and she has red lipstick on.\" class=\"sc-d1200759-0 dvfjxj\"\/>Steve James<\/p>\n<p>Bethan James died from a combination of sepsis, pneumonia and Crohn&#8217;s disease in 2020<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The daughter of a former Glamorgan and England cricketer could have been saved if she received the correct treatment, an inquest has heard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Bethan James, 21, from Cardiff, died on 9 February 2020 and a post-mortem examination found her cause of death was a combination of sepsis, pneumonia and Crohn&#8217;s disease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The inquest at  Pontypridd Coroner&#8217;s Court heard she had been diagnosed with Crohn&#8217;s in the previous months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Giving evidence on the first day of the inquest, Bethan&#8217;s mother Jane James, told the court she felt medical staff missed opportunities to treat her for sepsis. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The hearing was told that Ms James was admitted to hospital on a number of occasions in the days leading up to her death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Jane James said she felt doctors and nursing staff had been dismissive of her daughter&#8217;s condition.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1748533035_713_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-d1200759-0 dkIvM hide-when-no-script\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/e5928190-4084-11f0-a90d-79ba88a72a56.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Family photo A blonde woman wearing a pink jacket over a white dress smiles at the camera. She has a drink in front of her and is sat at a table in a rural area with trees and fields behind her.\" class=\"sc-d1200759-0 dvfjxj\"\/>Family photo<\/p>\n<p>Bethan&#8217;s mum Jane James said there were missed opportunities to save her<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">She was admitted to hospital on 8 February after her condition worsened and she died the following day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Her mum told the inquest that at no point was the possibility that her daughter had sepsis mentioned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The inquest heard Bethan was first treated by a paramedic and then at the University Hospital of Wales (UHW) in Cardiff.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Ms James said she felt her daughter could have been saved if staff had given her the right care and treatment for sepsis, adding that it was &#8220;heartbreaking&#8221; to know her life could have been saved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The inquest also heard from some of the medical staff who treated Bethan, including Dr Chen Wen Ngua who is a consultant at UHW.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">In response to Bethan&#8217;s mother telling the court that she felt his manner had been dismissive, Dr Ngua apologised, saying that was not his intention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Dr Mark Willis, a neurology specialist registrar at the time, treated Bethan on two occasions after she went to the A&amp;E department at UHW.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">He recommended that she could be discharged, following a number of tests, before retuning later that week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Dr Willis was asked about a comment he made about a 17-year-old with similar symptoms who had made a full recovery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">He said that his intention was to be comforting and apologised if the comments were taken as being falsely reassuring.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1748533035_713_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-d1200759-0 dkIvM hide-when-no-script\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/e38d87d0-409a-11f0-a90d-6b992e1c44a7.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Family photo A man smiling as he holds his daughter in a photo. he has black hair and she has blonde hair and is wearing a pink top.\" class=\"sc-d1200759-0 dvfjxj\"\/>Family photo<\/p>\n<p>Bethan James was the daughter of the former captain of the Glamorgan cricket team, Steve James<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The final witness was Paul Humphrey, from the Welsh Ambulance Service, who attended Bethan&#8217;s home on 8 February.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">He told the hearing that after taking some tests he contacted the control room as he was concerned about her condition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">When the ambulance crew arrived, he told them that she could be suffering from one of three conditions &#8211; sepsis, an infection or Addison&#8217;s disease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">When asked by the coroner if he would do anything differently Mr Humphrey said he would not, adding that he was &#8220;shocked&#8221;
