{"id":155612,"date":"2025-06-03T19:45:17","date_gmt":"2025-06-03T19:45:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/155612\/"},"modified":"2025-06-03T19:45:17","modified_gmt":"2025-06-03T19:45:17","slug":"it-seems-like-science-fiction-researchers-unleash-breakthrough-tracking-technology-using-environmental-dna","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/155612\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;It Seems Like Science Fiction\u201d: Researchers Unleash Breakthrough Tracking Technology Using Environmental DNA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientists have revealed a novel means of tracking everything from <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/satellite-data-is-revealing-the-return-of-an-elusive-predator-to-finlands-remote-wilderness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wildlife<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/illicit-cannabis-products-contain-potentially-dangerous-fungal-toxins-new-research-reveals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">illicit substances<\/a> using environmental <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/scientists-complete-first-comprehensive-map-of-human-dna-recombination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DNA<\/a> detectable in the <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/cold-war-radioactive-dust-is-still-circulating-in-european-air-alarming-new-research-reveals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">air<\/a> around us.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The findings, outlined in a new study published in Nature Ecology &amp; Evolution, show that tracking virtually anything using environmental DNA can be achieved as simply as capturing this ever-present <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/ancient-genetic-discovery-challenges-single-lineage-theory-of-human-origins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">genetic material<\/a> from the air using a vacuum.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The discovery, made by a team led by David Duffy, Ph.D., reveals DNA as a powerful new tool for detecting and tracking living organisms and a range of substances in virtually any environment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Duffy, a professor of wildlife disease genomics at the University of Florida, led the recent study, saying that the amount of information accessible to scientists through environmental DNA \u201cis such that we\u2019re only starting to consider what the potential applications can be, from humans, to wildlife to other species that have implications for human health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>From Sea Turtles to Humans and Beyond<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Originally developed to study the genetics of Florida\u2019s sea turtles, Duffy and the team at the University of Florida\u2019s Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience say their technique can be used to study every species on Earth using samples obtained from locations like soil and water in virtually any environment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Duffy and the team say that genetic material left behind by organisms also becomes airborne, leaving genetic evidence of any nearby organisms floating in the surrounding environment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Duffy and the team initially thought extracting useful amounts of DNA from the surrounding environment might be challenging, that turned out not to be the case.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re actually finding a lot of informative DNA,\u201d Duffy recently explained, adding that environmental DNA (eDNA) allows researchers an effective new tool for studying species without having to directly disturb them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt opens up huge possibilities to study all the species in an area simultaneously,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/news.ufl.edu\/2025\/06\/air-environmental-dna\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Duffy said<\/a>, \u201cfrom microbes and viruses all the way up to vertebrates like bobcats and humans, and everything in between.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Detecting Dublin\u2019s Airborne DNA <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To illustrate the effectiveness of their new tool, the research team successfully demonstrated its ability to detect signs of hundreds of different human pathogens using Dublin, Ireland, as a proving ground.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/researchers-are-engineering-bacteria-to-help-break-down-microplastics-in-the-fight-against-pollution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bacteria<\/a> to viruses, the team\u2019s method detected the presence of hundreds of <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/scientists-create-swarming-micro-robots-that-can-hunt-microplastics-and-bacteria-contaminating-water\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">human pathogens<\/a> in the Dublin air, showcasing the technology\u2019s ability to track the spread of emerging diseases and the emergence of common allergens in ways that were never thought possible before.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-35712 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Dublin.jpg\" alt=\"Environmental DNA\" width=\"600\" height=\"519\"  data- style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; Duffy and the team\u2019s eDNA capabilities also allow the collection of genetic information from the environment to be obtained with unprecedented speed and relative ease.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, the team\u2019s study reveals that the DNA of every species in each environment could be processed within a day by a single researcher using readily accessible equipment and cloud-based software. Such applications extend the use of eDNA for environmental studies to a much larger number of scientists worldwide.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Duffy says the technology has demonstrated the ability to meet the demands of current environmental problems in ways that were once considered impossible.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt seems like science fiction,\u201d Duffy says, \u201cbut it\u2019s becoming science fact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Duffy and his colleagues\u2019 paper, \u201cShotgun sequencing of airborne eDNA achieves rapid assessment of whole biomes, population genetics and genomic variation,\u201d appeared in Nature Ecology &amp; Evolution on June 3, 2025.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Micah Hanks is the Editor-in-Chief and Co-Founder of The Debrief.
