{"id":156121,"date":"2025-06-04T00:24:15","date_gmt":"2025-06-04T00:24:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/156121\/"},"modified":"2025-06-04T00:24:15","modified_gmt":"2025-06-04T00:24:15","slug":"watford-councillors-disappointed-by-recycling-rates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/156121\/","title":{"rendered":"Watford councillors &#8216;disappointed&#8217; by recycling rates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  At a cabinet meeting yesterday (June 2), a report noted that the percentage of waste recycled or composted was 43.25 per cent in the last quarter of 2024\/25, below the 52 per cent target.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Cllr Tim Williams, the council\u2019s portfolio holder for neighbourhood services, said: \u201cWe did notice these figures coming in a little bit lower than we expected, and we were disappointed at that.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cWe have picked up conversations with officers about it, I\u2019ve even picked up a conversation with a Herts County Council waste manager as well, and we do have a further meeting scheduled this month to go into this in more depth.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He suggested a \u201ccombination of factors\u201d had led to the figures being below expectations, including the \u201cminimal\u201d amount of garden waste created during the quarter.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Cllr Williams added: \u201cStill far too much of our food waste is going into the residual waste stream, and as a council and all of us, we need to encourage residents to use the weekly food waste collection.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cI know \u2026 a further rollout of the food waste collection to flats will be occurring.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said the expansion of the collection to flats over the next year would \u201chopefully\u201d raise recycling and composting rates, but admitted the current figure is \u201cslightly below where we\u2019d want it to be\u201d.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   alt=\"Peter Taylor.\" style=\"width: 100%;\"\/>Peter Taylor. (Image: Watford Borough Council)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.watfordobserver.co.uk\/news\/25203380.watfords-first-black-female-civic-mayor-concludes-term\/?rel=cl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Watford&#8217;s first Black female civic mayor completes term<\/a><\/strong><br \/><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.watfordobserver.co.uk\/news\/25203091.no-spitting-hemel-protection-order-set-extension\/?rel=cl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u200b&#8217;No spitting in Hemel&#8217; public order set for extension<\/a><\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He said: \u201cI know that when the league tables are produced for councils with the highest percentage of recycling , those councils that have many residents living in large houses with large gardens are at a little bit of an advantage.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cBut we are still in the top 25 per cent of councils when it comes to recycling, which, given our demographic, is actually really impressive.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Cllr Williams said recycling rates in Watford are higher than those in areas including Harrow, Luton and Stevenage.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Noting progress on another council service, Mr Taylor said it was \u201cpositive\u201d that the council had hired three more parking enforcement officers.
