It\u2019s difficult to imagine the 1960s without some of the more inflammatory acts of the decade. While peace and love were certainly the order of the day, the end of the decade, the need for rebellion and the aggression that came with it became all the more prevalent. John Entwistle<\/a> wasn\u2019t much for aggression. <\/p>\n His thunderous bass playing obviously spoke for itself, but it also belied a relatively taciturn and quiet personality. In a band with the explosive personalities of Keith Moon, Pete Townshend, and Roger Daltrey, Entwistle didn\u2019t have to say much or jump around in the same ways to command attention. He was the calm in the eye of the storm that was The Who, and he held down that position for nearly 30 years. While the storm raged, Entwistle was a moment of sanctuary, a story post to tie your worries to. \u00a0<\/p>\n In that time, Entwistle would occasionally flash a smile, but little else to indicate how he felt about particular songs. He got some of his own compositions into the band, including tracks like \u2018Boris the Spider\u2019 and \u2018My Wife\u2019, the latter of which became Entwistle\u2019s signature song to sing during live performances. Although he managed to fit in all-time classic bass solos on songs like \u2018My Generation\u2019 and \u2018Who Are You\u2019, Entwistle played them dutifully and seemingly dispassionately, and least from a visual point of view.<\/p>\n The other members of the band were vocal about which songs they despised. Townshend explained that a fake bit of stage act<\/a> ruined \u2018Sister Disco\u2019 for him and claims to never have loved \u2018Dreaming From the Waist\u2019 from The Who By Numbers. For his part, Daltrey felt that he \u201ccouldn\u2019t connect\u201d<\/a> with songs like \u2018Substitute\u2019 and seems to take delight in taking apart beloved Who classics, specifically the time Daltrey once claimed to be \u201cbloody bored shitless\u201d<\/a> of singing \u2018Won\u2019t Get Fooled Again\u2019. <\/p>\n It\u2019s a part of almost every classic rock act\u2019s schtick. An unwillingness to actually enjoy playing the music you have made is part of their unending repertoire of rock and roll tropes. John Lennon might have been one of the first to take real potshots at his and The Beatles\u2019 work, but soon enough, everyone began digging out the earliest moments of the band they proclaimed to adore. Comparatively, Entwistle never had any inflammatory statements regarding any Who songs. All except for one: Entwistle claimed that he never liked playing \u2018Magic Bus\u2019 live.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cI really hated playing \u2018Magic Bus\u2019,\u201d Entwistle claims in the interview segments for the box set compilation Thirty Years of Maximum R&B Live. \u201c\u2018Magic Bus\u2019 was sometimes, like, eight minutes of A,\u201d he added. Entwistle even claims that there are some recordings where he nearly falls asleep playing the song. <\/p>\n Entwistle isn\u2019t wrong: the band would sometimes play \u2018Magic Bus\u2019 for nearly 15 minutes, during which time Entwistle had little to do but play the root note. During the same interview segments, however, Townshend claims to love the song due to its use of the Bo Diddley beat.
