{"id":158563,"date":"2025-06-04T21:55:10","date_gmt":"2025-06-04T21:55:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/158563\/"},"modified":"2025-06-04T21:55:10","modified_gmt":"2025-06-04T21:55:10","slug":"only-shop-in-village-will-attract-undesirables-if-it-sells-alcohol-neighbours-fear","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/158563\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Only shop in village&#8217; will &#8216;attract undesirables&#8217; if it sells alcohol, neighbours fear"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South Gloucestershire councillors will consider neighbours&#8217; objections next week<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/0_Cotswold-Service-Station-In-Old-Sodbury.jpg\" alt=\"Petrol station and shop with blue signs\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Cotswold Service Station in Old Sodbury(Image: Google Maps)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Villagers are fighting plans for a petrol station to start selling alcohol and stay open for two hours later, fearing it could \u2018attract undesirables\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Residents in Old Sodbury have <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/council.southglos.gov.uk\/documents\/s160217\/report%20cotswold.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"objected to a premises licence applicationLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">objected to a premises licence application<\/a> for Cotswold Service Station in Badminton Road.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/south-gloucestershire\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">South Gloucestershire<\/a> Council licensing sub-committee will decide whether to approve or refuse the request at a meeting on Wednesday, June 11.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">None of the authorities, including the police and trading standards, are opposing the application by Niza Southwater Ltd to sell booze for off-sales at the petrol station\u2019s shop from 6am to 11pm daily, and one neighbour has written in support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">But <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/council.southglos.gov.uk\/documents\/s160221\/Appendix%20Four%20R.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"six others have lodged objectionsLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">six others have lodged objections<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">One wrote: \u201cI object to this application as it can only lead to potential alcohol related problems in the village which, at present, does not attract undesirables.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Another said: \u201cI object on the grounds of there already being an element of antisocial behaviour in the village, post 9pm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cA late convenience store may well encourage this, particularly with the sale of alcohol and tobacco products.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A third added: \u201cI feel that opening until 11pm at this site is excessive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThe site currently closes at 9pm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cIf the vendor feels that an extension is needed then perhaps 10pm would be acceptable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThe area is very quiet by then and I just feel that 11pm is outside the general feel of the village.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Others said the petrol station already caused noise disturbance and traffic problems for neighbours and that an extension to closing time would make this worse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">But one resident wrote: \u201cI support this application as it will increase the offering to villagers, especially with it being the only shop in the village.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Try BristolLive Premium for FREE without intrusive ads and brilliant new features<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">No intrusive adverts, pop-ups or distractions!
