{"id":158653,"date":"2025-06-04T22:42:13","date_gmt":"2025-06-04T22:42:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/158653\/"},"modified":"2025-06-04T22:42:13","modified_gmt":"2025-06-04T22:42:13","slug":"plans-to-tackle-mental-health-crisis-not-ambitious-enough-charity-boss-tells-sky-news-uk-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/158653\/","title":{"rendered":"Plans to tackle mental health crisis &#8216;not ambitious enough&#8217;, charity boss tells Sky News | UK News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Government plans to strengthen mental health services are &#8220;not ambitious enough&#8221;, a charity head has told Sky News.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Sarah Hughes, chief executive of mental health charity Mind, spoke to <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/the-uk-tonight-with-sarah-jane-mee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The UK Tonight with Sarah-Jane Mee<\/strong><\/a> after a report on <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/mental-health-cases-at-aande-reach-crisis-level-as-waits-get-longer-and-specialised-beds-dwindle-13378864\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>mental health cases at A&amp;E reaching crisis levels<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sky&#8217;s health correspondent <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/author\/ashish-joshi-489\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Ashish Joshi<\/strong><\/a> reported that waiting times for these cases have risen, and overnight beds in mental health units are down almost 3,700 in a decade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sdc-site-video__accessibility-message\" data-role=\"accessibility-message\">Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player<\/p>\n<p>                <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/skynews-joshi-mental-health_6934190.jpg\" alt=\"A nurse in a special mental health A&amp;E room\"  aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"sdc-site-video__poster-img\"\/><\/p>\n<p>                8:26<\/p>\n<p>              <video id=\"id_a0907fbc-a5dc-4c1b-b2c7-7d3def8934da\" data-embed=\"default\" data-application-id=\"\" class=\"video-js sdc-site-video__tag\" controls=\"\" playsinline=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p>              A&amp;E mental health crisis<\/p>\n<p>Dr Hughes called the report &#8220;incredibly important insight into what&#8217;s happening,&#8221; before adding: &#8220;One of our wonderful campaigners waited 87 hours on a stretcher when she was incredibly distressed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These are scenes are happening up and down the country, and I&#8217;m afraid to say that whilst I&#8217;m devastated to see them, I&#8217;m not surprised.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She then said that while &#8220;there are all sorts of services&#8221; across the UK for <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/topic\/mental-health-7803\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>mental health<\/strong><\/a>, they are &#8220;nowhere near the level that we need&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>          <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"sdc-article-image__item\" loading=\"lazy\" intrinsicsize=\"768x432\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/skynews-sarah-jane-mee-ashish-joshi_6934735.jpg\"   alt=\"Dr Sarah Hughes, chief executive of mental health charity Mind\"\/><\/p>\n<p>        Image:<br \/>\n        Dr Sarah Hughes says a spike in mental health cases at A&amp;E &#8216;can be resolved quite easily by beefing up what&#8217;s available in the community&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;We know what works&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are seeing thousands and thousands of people go into A&amp;E every month for very serious mental health challenges, and this can be resolved quite easily by beefing up what&#8217;s available in the community,&#8221; Dr Hughes said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;By making sure that community mental health services are resourced so that people are caught far earlier, that we don&#8217;t hit crisis, that they&#8217;re able to get the support they need well before they get into trouble.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We know what works: We know that with proper investment that we could avoid this situation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The charity boss also said that while new initiatives from the government on services would be welcomed, &#8220;fundamentally, without mental health support, we&#8217;re not enabling [people] to thrive&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In fact,&#8221; she said, &#8220;we&#8217;re putting them into incredibly vulnerable situations day in day out. They are carrying the risk here.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We know that mental health staff in A&amp;Es are also really struggling. They want to do a good job, and they can&#8217;t. They&#8217;re not resourced to.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>          <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"sdc-article-image__item\" loading=\"lazy\" intrinsicsize=\"768x432\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/skynews-mental-health-joshi_6934192.jpg\"   alt=\"A mental health nurse on a hospital ward\"\/><\/p>\n<p>        Image:<br \/>\n        Over the last five years, waits of 12 hours or more for a mental health bed have increased by more than 380%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Plans to tackle spike in cases &#8216;not ambitious enough&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>New Freedom of Information data gathered by the Royal College of Nursing shows that over the last five years, waits of 12 hours or more for a mental health bed have increased by more than 380%.<\/p>\n<p>When asked about whether <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/topic\/nhs-5893\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NHS<\/a> <\/strong>and government plans will help tackle the sharp rise, Dr Hughes said: &#8220;We already know that they don&#8217;t and they won&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are expecting a real-terms cut in terms of the funding around mental health going forward. We are not convinced or persuaded that we&#8217;ve got the share of spend that&#8217;s right for mental health.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re concerned that the plans for mental health are not ambitious enough.
