And the city, known for its rambunctious spirit, lived up to its cheeky reputation.<\/p>\n<p>The artwork was vandalized, with the lighthouse and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/culture\/2025\/05\/30\/elusive-street-artist-banksy-reveals-new-artwork-in-france\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>its poignant message<\/strong><\/a> turned into a penis with an added pair of testicles. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hardly very original, but also not entirely surprising.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/culture\/2023\/11\/21\/banksys-real-name-revealed-unearthed-2003-interview-seems-to-unveil-artists-identity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>elusive UK artist<\/strong><\/a> has often stated that their works are meant to be reinterpreted &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/culture\/2021\/10\/14\/love-is-in-the-bin-shredded-banksy-artwork-sells-for-nearly-22-million-at-auction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>even hijacked<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 but we\u2019re not sure if this is what he \/ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/culture\/2025\/04\/11\/a-conspiracy-undone-is-banksy-a-woman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>she<\/strong><\/a> \/ they had in mind.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The crudely altered lighthouse was promptly restored and shining again within 24 hours of the purple gonad additions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tried to clean up some of the tags that had been made last night, because in fact it takes a while for the anti-graffiti varnish to really work,\u201d explained Agn\u00e8s Perrone, a heritage decor painter, to AFP.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey waited until I went to bed, even very late, to come and add a nice pair of bollocks around the lighthouse,\u201d she said, adding: \u201cI find it very stupid.
