One of the biggest royal scandals in recent memory came when King Charles III and the late Princess Diana announced their separation in 1992 after 10 years of marriage. At the time, [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Keep scrolling for a look back at some frightening incidents that took place at royal residences:<\/p>\n<p>Windsor Castle Break-In<\/p>\n<p>Thames Valley Police confirmed that an intruder was in custody after attempting to break into the royal family\u2019s country estate. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/prince-william\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Prince William<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/kate-middleton\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Kate Middleton<\/strong><\/a> live on the grounds of Windsor Castle at Adelaide Cottage with their children Prince George, born 2013, Princess Charlotte, born 2015, and Prince Louis, born 2018.<\/p>\n<p>A police spokesperson told <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/intruder-arrested-windsor-castle-break-in-attempt-kate-middleton-prince-william-home-11747218\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">People<\/a>, \u201cAt just after 1 p.m. on Sunday a man entered restricted grounds at Windsor Castle. He was quickly challenged by Met police officers and arrested. He did not enter the inner grounds of Windsor Castle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the suspect was arrested on \u201csuspicion of trespass on a protected site and possession of Class A drugs,\u201d before being released on bail.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOfficers in the grounds spotted the man just after 13:00 hrs on Sunday, 1 June and quickly arrested him. He was then passed into the custody of Thames Valley Police,\u201d the Metropolitan Police statement added.<\/p>\n<p>Princess Diana Home Targeted in Arson<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4003349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/GettyImages-1127560775-Althorp-House.jpg\" alt=\"GettyImages-1127560775 Althorp House.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1500\"  \/><br \/>\n Althorp House David Goddard<\/p>\n<p>The late <strong>Princess Diana<\/strong>\u2019s brother <strong>Charles Spencer<\/strong> wrote via <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/cspencer1508\/status\/1927657748658794638\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">X<\/a> in May 2025 that he was \u201cstunned\u201d that their childhood home \u2013 known as Althorp House \u2013 was targeted in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrity-news\/news\/princess-dianas-childhood-home-targeted-by-vandals-farmhouse-destroyed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a suspected arson<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStunned to learn that one of \u2066@AlthorpHouse \u2069\u2019s farmhouses \u2013 fortunately, unoccupied at the time \u2013 was apparently burnt down by vandals last night. Charles assumed the British throne in September 2022 after the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, at the age of 96. \u201cMy [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<p>An investigation into the fire was ongoing in June 2025. Police suggested the fire was caused deliberately but the exact cause is \u201cyet to be determined.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A previous fire destroyed an industrial unit at Althorp House in September 2024. Althorp House hosted an exhibition about Princess Diana\u2019s early life between 1998 and 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Masked Break-In Attempt<\/p>\n<p>In November 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/masked-burglars-raid-windsor-castle-grounds-while-william-kate-and-children-slept-at-home-on-estate-13256017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sky News<\/a> reported that masked thieves stole two farm vehicles after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrity-news\/news\/burglary-attempted-near-prince-william-kate-middletons-windsor-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">breaking into Windsor Castle<\/a> while Prince William and his family slept nearby in Adelaide Cottage.<\/p>\n<p>Two masked men reportedly scaled the 6-foot fence to illegally gain entry to the property and then commandeered a truck to burst through a security gate. The pair fled the scene a short time later after stealing a red quad bike and an Isuzu pick-up truck.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt around 11:45 p.m. on Sunday 13 October, we received a report of burglary at a property on Crown Estate land near to the A308 in Windsor,\u201d Thames Valley Police said in a statement at the time. \u201cOffenders entered a farm building and made off with a black Isuzu pick-up and a red quad bike. They then made off towards the Old Windsor\/Datchet area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo arrests have been made at this stage and an investigation is ongoing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No further updates have been announced publicly.<\/p>\n<p>Santa Barbara Security Breach<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4003346\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/GettyImages-1231564032Prince-Harry-Meghan-Markle-Estate-e1749077563860.jpg\" alt=\"GettyImages-1231564032.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"651\"  \/><br \/>\n Prince Harry and Meghan Markle\u2019s California estate. VALERIE MACON\/AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/07\/25\/harry-and-meghan-had-two-intruder-scares-in-12-days-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The New York Post<\/a> reported in July 2022 that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/prince-harry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Prince Harry<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/meghan-markle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Meghan Markle<\/strong><\/a> had six security alerts at their Montecito, California mansion within a 16-month period. Two intruder incidents allegedly occurred within 12 days of each other.<\/p>\n<p>In the first instance, a suspected trespasser got onto the couple\u2019s property on their wedding anniversary of May 17, 2022. A second incident involved the couple\u2019s security team confronting an alleged trespasser who agreed to leave the property without further action taken.<\/p>\n<p>Another suspected intruder was caught on the property in 2020 and ordered not to return.<\/p>\n<p>Crossbow Intruder<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4003344\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/GettyImages-1258814933-Windsor-Castle-e1749077428721.jpg\" alt=\"GettyImages-1258814933 Windsor Castle.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"636\"  \/><br \/>\n Windsor Castle in June 2023. P Photo\/Kirsty Wigglesworth, Pool<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jaswant Singh Chail<\/strong> pleaded guilty to one count of trying to \u201cinjure or alarm\u201d the Queen under the Treason Act, possession of an offensive weapon and making threats to kill following a botched Christmas Day 2021 break-in attempt at Windsor Castle, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/man-caught-with-loaded-crossbow-in-late-queen-assassination-bid-sentenced-to-nine-years-in-custody-12960625\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sky News<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors said in court that Chail formulated a plan over the course of a year to try to assassinate Queen Elizabeth II as revenge for the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre in India, where hundreds were killed during a clash between British colonial forces and independence activists.<\/p>\n<p>Chail allegedly vlogged about his intention to invade Windsor Castle while armed with a crossbow and wearing a Star Wars mask. In the documentary The King of UFOs, which premiered on Amazon Prime Video last month, Paranormal historian Richard Felix [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry for what I\u2019ve done and what I will do. I\u2019m going to attempt to assassinate Elizabeth, Queen of the Royal Family,\u201d he said in one chilling vlog.<\/p>\n<p>Police apprehended Chail on the grounds of Windsor Castle before he could carry through his plot. He was sentenced to nine years in custody.<\/p>\n<p>Windsor Castle Fire<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rct.uk\/visit\/windsor-castle\/the-fire-at-windsor-castle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A raging fire<\/a> destroyed 115 rooms \u2013 including nine State Rooms \u2014 at Windsor Castle in the early morning hours of November 20, 1992 after a spotlight ignited a curtain inside Queen Victoria\u2019s Private Chapel.<\/p>\n<p>By the time the fire was spotted, it had already moved beyond the chapel and engulfed the nearby St George\u2019s Hall next door. As firefighters were busy using 36 pumps to try to extinguish the flames, royal staff desperately tried removing as many works of art and other historic items from the property before they were burned. Their remarkable efforts were successful, as only a rosewood sideboard and a <strong>Sir William Beechey<\/strong> painting were lost in the blaze.<\/p>\n<p>Fire crews eventually contained the situation after 15 hours. It took an extensive reconstruction effort over the course of five years to fully restore Windsor Castle by 1997.<\/p>\n<p>Bedroom Intruder<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4003364\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/GettyImages-2213614838-Buckingham-Palace-e1749078129967.jpg\" alt=\"GettyImages-2213614838 Buckingham Palace.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\"  \/><br \/>\n Buckingham Palace in April 2025. Morgan\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michael Fagan<\/strong> broke into Buckingham Palace twice in July 1982, including <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/onthisday\/hi\/dates\/stories\/july\/9\/newsid_2498000\/2498731.stm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">getting into Queen Elizabeth II\u2019s bedroom<\/a> in his second attempt. Fagan allegedly made it over barbed wire fencing on Buckingham Palace\u2019s walls and then scaled a drainpipe, before entering the royal family\u2019s living quarters.<\/p>\n<p>The Queen woke up to find Fagan holding a shard of glass at her bedside, so she engaged him in a lengthy conversation in order to keep him occupied. When her attempt to alert the palace switchboard went unanswered, she finally used the alarm bell at her bedside.<\/p>\n<p>Fagan was apprehended but wasn\u2019t actually charged with trespassing in the Queen\u2019s bedroom due to a quirk in British law at the time.
