{"id":159316,"date":"2025-06-05T04:42:11","date_gmt":"2025-06-05T04:42:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/159316\/"},"modified":"2025-06-05T04:42:11","modified_gmt":"2025-06-05T04:42:11","slug":"northern-irelands-cancer-patients-facing-a-ticking-time-bomb-over-doctor-shortages-the-irish-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/159316\/","title":{"rendered":"Northern Ireland\u2019s cancer patients facing \u2018a ticking time bomb\u2019 over doctor shortages \u2013 The Irish News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/cancer\/\">CANCER<\/a> patients in Northern Ireland are facing a \u201cticking time bomb\u201d for diagnosis and treatment over a chronic shortage of doctors, a new report has found. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Two reports by the Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) said the demand for radiologists and oncologists is growing faster than the workforce. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">With a shortage of 56 radiologists in Northern Ireland, the reports questioned why an \u201cunsustainable\u201d \u00a311m was spent last year on \u201ctemporary workforce solutions\u201d \u2013 enough money to hire 98 radiologists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Despite a cancer patient\u2019s risk of death increasing by 10% every month that treatment is delayed, every radiology leader in the north last year reported delayed diagnostic scans due to staff shortages.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/council-investigating-demolition-of-listed-co-antrim-pub-RQUXTB5HVFA4HHNJ5YUJYWKBT4\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Council investigating demolition of listed Co Antrim pub\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/1749098530_548_IQIBC464XBHFTJS6SWENIWOGZI.png\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/painful-decision-sees-christian-march-in-belfast-cancelled-RLE5KTQ7GBBOTB6BGLMRWRGUWI\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"&#x2018;Painful decision&#x2019; sees Christian march in Belfast cancelled \" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/1749098531_505_IVUCLPTLGVA37GY5RRND42T2IY.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">A total of 80% also said they lacked enough radiologists to deliver safe and effective care.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Calling it a \u201ctragic situation,\u201d the RCR predict Northern Ireland\u2019s 27% shortfall of radiologists will rise to 41% by 2029.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">A 14% shortage of oncologists is also expected to increase to 22% in the same period. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Dr Katharine Halliday, President of the Royal College of Radiologists, said the outlook for services was \u201cbleak\u201d without boosting staff numbers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWe are doing all we can to boost productivity, but there\u2019s a limit to how far we can go. The reality is we simply don\u2019t have enough staff,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cAny credible plan to cut waiting lists relies on having the headcount to meet the demand we face today, let alone tomorrow. The longer we delay action, the worse it gets. The government must train up more radiologists and oncologists to defuse this ticking time bomb for cancer diagnosis and treatment.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Contributing anonymously to the report, one consultant clinical oncologist said: \u201cOur waiting times for breast radiotherapy are now the worst I have ever known in 20 years. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Dr Katharine Halliday, President of the Royal College of Radiologists\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/P6JGVXPV4JA6XG5QHFCPC5B4UQ.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"600\"\/>Dr Katharine Halliday, President of the Royal College of Radiologists. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cPatients are waiting over four weeks to be seen\u2026 and then another eight weeks to start radiotherapy.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Others reported colleagues on leave with stress-related health issues and having to hire locum staff from high-cost agencies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Responding to the report, a Department of Health spokesperson acknowledged the shortages but said there had been \u201csignificant investment\u201d to grow the imaging workforce in Northern Ireland over the last 10 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Commissioned Radiology medical specialty training places have also increased by half, from 37 in 2015\/16 to 56 in 2025\/26.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">A business case is being developed for a multi-professional Northern Ireland Imaging Academy, which aims to increase the supply of locally trained consultant radiologists and advanced radiographer practitioners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">It is hoped this will increase imaging capacity for all clinical specialties, reduce waiting lists for diagnosis and treatment and meet demands from unscheduled care.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"The new service is being rolled out across the NHS in England\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/LA7FLNCHW5OFFEES66TSTLQLUE.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"533\"\/>The Royal College of Radiologists has said training more specialists will &#8220;future proof&#8221; cancer services and reduce spend on locums.
