We&#8217;re here to help<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/0_walsall1JPG.jpg\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Walsall Spiritualist Church on Caldmore Road(Image: Bond Wolfe)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The English language is quite a marvel, especially when you add a dash of West Midlands idiosyncrasy to the mix, which can lead to some pronunciation pitfalls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">This might explain why so many places in our beloved region have names that are often completely mispronounced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">So, we thought we&#8217;d lend a hand and guide visitors to <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Birmingham<\/a> and the Black Country by clarifying how to pronounce certain regional place names.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Read more: <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/news\/money\/expert-warns-uk-households-over-31756545\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Feature that makes 50p coins worth far more<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">There&#8217;s no shortage of them &#8211; and if you come across any more, feel free to share them on our Facebook page.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">1. <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/all-about\/smethwick\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Smethwick<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">When pronouncing it, use &#8216;th&#8217; as in &#8216;the&#8217; rather than &#8216;hath&#8217;. And disregard the &#8216;w&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">2. Caldmore<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">This one is a bit tricky. You might as well ignore the letters. It is pronounced &#8216;Karma&#8217;. Don&#8217;t ask why.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">3. Great Wyrley<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">This looks like you&#8217;d say &#8220;Great wirely&#8221; but in practice, its &#8220;Great whirly&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">4. Wilnecote<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/0_dnr_tmm_280423KFC1.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>New KFC in Ninian Way, Wilnecote.(Image: Brian John Brown)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">There are plenty of tricky names around the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/all-about\/tamworth\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Tamworth<\/a> area, and this is one of them. You need to ignore the central &#8216;E&#8217; &#8211; it&#8217;s not &#8216;Wilnercutt&#8217;, it&#8217;s &#8216;Wilncutt&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">5. Tettenhall<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">This one is a bit of a challenge. Colloquially, it&#8217;s &#8216;Tetnul&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It&#8217;s probably supposed to be &#8216;Tetenul&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">6. Wednesbury<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It&#8217;s &#8216;Wensbree&#8217;. So difficult to pronounce that the Ikea there is referred to as &#8216;Birmingham&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">7. Rowley Regis<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It&#8217;s &#8216;row&#8217; as in argue, rather than &#8216;row&#8217; as in boat race.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">8. Knowle<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">There are a few people out there who pronounce the &#8216;K&#8217;. That&#8217;s frowned upon on the posh side of <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/all-about\/solihull\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Solihull<\/a>. They also insist that the &#8216;O&#8217; in Solihull has the correct vowel sound &#8211; think the word &#8216;so&#8217;, not the beer &#8216;Sol&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">9. It&#8217;s Withall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">10. Alcester<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">This one often gets butchered. It&#8217;s Ullster &#8211; not Alsesster.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">11. Alvechurch<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Here, the E is superfluous. It&#8217;s Alvchurch, not Alverchurch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">12. Weoley Castle<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Ignore that O &#8211; it&#8217;s pronounced like the wheelie you did on a bike back in your youth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">13. Cradley Heath<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Some locals might dispute this, but it&#8217;s Craydley Heath, not Craddley Heath.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">14. <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/all-about\/walsall\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Walsall<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/0_walsall-town-centre-GV.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Park Street, Walsall town centre, pictured September 2024<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Locally, the first L isn&#8217;t pronounced. So it&#8217;s said more like the Polish capital, Warsaw.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">15. <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/all-about\/billesley-and-hall-green\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Billesley<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Despite appearances, there aren&#8217;t three syllables &#8211; it&#8217;s not Bill Es Lee, it&#8217;s Billslee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">16. Aldridge<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Think all &#8211; not (you can call me) Al.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">17. <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/all-about\/bordesley-green-and-small-heath\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Bordesley Green<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">You can skip a syllable here. It&#8217;s Bordsley Green, not Bordersly Green.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">18. <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/all-about\/moseley\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Moseley<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">You need to get that vowel sound right. it&#8217;s Mowsley, not Mossley.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">19. Coleshill<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Mostly, it&#8217;s pronounced as it&#8217;s written but there are also plenty who call it Coesill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">20. <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/all-about\/worcestershire\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Worcestershire<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It&#8217;s Wusster. Americans really struggle with this one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">21. Minworth<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">This one actually causes some local disagreements &#8211; it may be that it&#8217;s pronounced &#8220;Minuth&#8221;, much like some thing Curdworth is pronounced &#8220;Cuduth&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">23. Nechells<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">People often say &#8216;Neeshells&#8217; and &#8216;Netchels&#8217;.
