{"id":159671,"date":"2025-06-05T07:52:14","date_gmt":"2025-06-05T07:52:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/159671\/"},"modified":"2025-06-05T07:52:14","modified_gmt":"2025-06-05T07:52:14","slug":"childrens-health-ireland-report-referred-to-gardai-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/159671\/","title":{"rendered":"Children\u2019s Health Ireland report referred to garda\u00ed \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">A report on waiting list irregularities and a \u201ctoxic\u201d work culture at a hospital run by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/childrens-health-ireland\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/childrens-health-ireland\">Children\u2019s Health Ireland<\/a> (CHI) is to be referred to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/garda-siochana\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/garda-siochana\">garda\u00ed<\/a> , the Cabinet committee on health has been told.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">The report, which not been published but has been widely reported in some media outlets, has caused shock in Government over the past week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">It is also understood the Health Service Executive (HSE) has indicated it may refer a consultant to the Medical Council arising from concerns over the CHI internal review if the hospital group does not do so. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">The revelations come after a series of scandals in CHI, which is due to run the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/national-childrens-hospital\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/national-childrens-hospital\">national children\u2019s hospital <\/a>when it opens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">The Cabinet committee on health was told on Wednesday that the HSE has referred the report to the Garda with a view to it being assessed for a possible investigation. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">The meeting was attended by Taoiseach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/micheal-martin\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/micheal-martin\">Miche\u00e1l Martin<\/a>, T\u00e1naiste <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/simon-harris\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/simon-harris\">Simon Harris<\/a>, Minister for Health <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jennifer-carroll\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jennifer-carroll\">Jennifer Carroll<\/a> MacNeill, Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe, Minister for Public Expenditure Jack Chambers and Minister for Children Norma Foley. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/health\/2025\/06\/04\/audit-of-chi-waiting-lists-ordered-to-ensure-productivity-in-public-hospitals-minister-for-health-says\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Audit of CHI waiting lists ordered to ensure productivity in public hospitals, Minister for Health saysOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/national-treatment-purchase-fund-board\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/national-treatment-purchase-fund-board\">National Treatment Purchase Fund<\/a> (NTPF), which buys treatments in the public and private sectors for patients on long waiting lists, has said it will pause funding for CHI while potential irregularities are investigated. Ms Carroll MacNeill has assured parents scheduled surgeries will not be delayed. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">Earlier this week, The Irish Times reported further findings, including about reports of a \u201ctoxic\u201d work culture in parts of a CHI hospital, where there were complaints of bullying and victimisation of trainees, and where one consultant had taken proceedings for defamation against another.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">The CHI internal report was drawn up in late 2021\/early 2022 but was not given to the then minister for health, the HSE or the NTPF.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">The report found CHI had a \u201cbroken culture\u201d created by dysfunctional relationships and challenging behaviour. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">It said there were also concerns about management of NTPF funding and a lack of oversight of access initiatives that ultimately were not in keeping with a memorandum of understanding between CHI and the NTPF. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/health\/2025\/06\/04\/chi-consultant-did-not-fulfil-his-on-call-hours-due-to-health-issues-while-running-weekend-clinic\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CHI consultant at centre of review did not fulfil on-call hours for three years due to \u2018health issues\u2019Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">The report raised concerns about five special weekend out-patient clinics for 179 children carried out by a consultant. These were funded by the NTPF.
