{"id":159843,"date":"2025-06-05T09:23:10","date_gmt":"2025-06-05T09:23:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/159843\/"},"modified":"2025-06-05T09:23:10","modified_gmt":"2025-06-05T09:23:10","slug":"dangerous-drug-cocktail-found-to-be-circulating-as-counterfeit-xanax-in-canberra","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/159843\/","title":{"rendered":"Dangerous drug cocktail found to be circulating as counterfeit Xanax in Canberra"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A dangerous drug cocktail has been found circulating in Canberra for the first time, sold as a counterfeit prescription anxiety medication.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The ACT government&#8217;s health directorate issued a public health alert on Thursday, explaining the combination had been discovered in a crushed pill portion presented to the city&#8217;s free drug-checking service, CanTEST, as a Xanax bar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The tested sample was found to contain diazepam, bromazolam and protonitazene, as well as alprazolam, the legitimate pharmaceutical medicine branded as Xanax but &#8220;not readily available in Australian pharmaceuticals&#8221;, a CanTEST alert said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Bromazolam is a dangerous benzodiazepine known for causing &#8220;severe and often unpredictable sedative effects, leading to hospitalisation including intensive care&#8221;, and protonitazene is a potent synthetic opioid 100 times stronger than heroin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Speaking about protonitazene, CanTEST said &#8220;even tiny amounts can cause overdose&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">ACT Health said the combination &#8220;has not previously been found in the ACT&#8221; and consumption significantly increases the risk of overdose and death, &#8220;especially when it is unexpected&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"a clinic worker testing a specimen in a lab\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/0d6776aa462ee2caac3c55ee9fd1bb76\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">CanTEST has reminded the public to test drugs before consuming them. (ABC News: Greg Nelson)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Alprazolam, bromazolam and diazepam are all benzodiazepines \u2014 sedatives that vary widely in strength, onset and duration,&#8221; the CanTEST&#8217;s alert said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;When mixed with opioids, they significantly increase the risk of depressant overdose.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Some counterfeit pharmaceuticals can look very convincing and even be in &#8216;branded&#8217; blister packs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">CanTEST issued a warning to the public, urging them to use their service to test drugs before taking them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Always assume your drugs might not be what you expect,&#8221; the alert said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;More common and very convincing&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In April, CanTEST detected bromazolam and clobromazolam (another new benzodiazepine, or benzo) in a partial\/broken white bar pill with a Xanax press, which was expected to only contain alprazolam.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The service warned &#8220;there is limited information available about them and they haven&#8217;t been used in human trials&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A photo of a crushed blue powder in a small clear bag next to a measuring ruler.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/48a62e5992617a2643b1851c6fc5b64e\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">CanTEST says protonitazene, a synthetic opioid significantly stronger than fentanyl, was found in this counterfeit oxycodone pill last month.
