{"id":160093,"date":"2025-06-05T11:35:16","date_gmt":"2025-06-05T11:35:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/160093\/"},"modified":"2025-06-05T11:35:16","modified_gmt":"2025-06-05T11:35:16","slug":"west-of-england-short-changed-by-government-transport-billions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/160093\/","title":{"rendered":"West of England &#8216;short-changed&#8217; by Government transport billions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Other parts of the country that have already had billions for mass transit systems are getting billions more to make them even better&#8221;This article contains affiliate links, we will receive a commission on any sales we generate from it.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/affiliates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Learn more<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/0_Ddc495c8-3d92-41a5-B0c4-A237bec33b0b.jpg\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Andy Burnham, the metro mayor of Greater Manchester, poses in front of a night bus(Image: Copyright Unknown)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The news that the Government is to invest \u00a3752 million in transport projects in the West of England has been welcomed across the region &#8211; although not everyone is completely happy with the announcement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Council leaders across Bristol, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/south-gloucestershire\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">South Gloucestershire<\/a> and <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/bath-and-north-east-somerset\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Bath<\/a> and North East Somerset lined up to praise <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/bristol-airport-could-tram-rail-10238210\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Chancellor Rachel Reeves\u2019 announcementLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Chancellor Rachel Reeves\u2019 announcement<\/a>, but those not in power questioned whether the news was actually all it was cracked up to be.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/conservative-party\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Conservatives<\/a> in Bristol claimed the money had already been announced once before &#8211; by the Tory Government back in 2023 &#8211; had been put on hold when <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/labour-party\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Labour<\/a> got into power in Westminster in 2024, and was only now being re-confirmed and re-announced as if it was something new.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Meanwhile, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/liberal-democrats\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Lib Dems<\/a> in Bristol said the West of England was being \u2018short-changed\u2019, pointing out that cities and regions in the north of England and the Midlands were getting much more money &#8211; into the billions &#8211; compared with the West of England.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/bristol-airport-could-tram-rail-10238210\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"announcement itself on Wednesday was carefully choreographedLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">announcement itself on Wednesday was carefully choreographed<\/a>. As Rachel Reeves gave a speech in front of a bus up north announcing a whopping \u00a315.6 billion for transport around the country, the new Labour metro mayor in the West of England, Helen Godwin, was doing interviews in front of an old tram at the Aerospace Museum on the northern edge of Bristol.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Sign up to receive daily news updates and breaking news alerts straight to your inbox for free <strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com?id=76202X1561091&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2F3r1T6AI&amp;sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bristolpost.co.uk%2Fnews%2Fbristol-news%2Fwest-england-short-changed-government-10240436\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"hereLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><\/strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">But one of the first things she clarified was that, contrary to the Government&#8217;s announcement that \u00a3800 million was heading west, it was, in fact, \u00a3752 million. What had happened was all the other regions were getting more than a billion pounds, some more than two billion, so the list was written in billions, and the West of England&#8217;s \u00a3752 million was initially written as \u00a30.752 billion, creatively rounded up to \u00a30.8 billion and then converted back to &#8216;\u00a3800 million&#8217; when it arrived in the West. Or actually not really, according to Cllr Andrew Brown, (Lib Dem, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/hengrove\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Hengrove<\/a> &amp; Whitchurch Park).<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The Bristol City councillor pointed out that, while the West of England were getting \u00a3752 million for a few more trains, better buses and what will probably be yet another feasibility study into whether you could get a tram line to <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/bristol-airport\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Bristol Airport<\/a>, other parts of the country that have already had billions for mass transit systems were getting billions more to make them even better.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cOut of the \u00a315.6 billion settlement, the West of England will only receive \u00a30.752 billion,\u201d he pointed out. \u201cThis leaves the West of England well behind the biggest winners, with Greater Manchester and the West Midlands receiving \u00a32.5bn and \u00a32.4bn respectively.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cEven the smaller city region of the Tees Valley is set to receive more than the West of England, with it seeing a \u00a31bn funding allocation in the settlement,\u201d he added. \u201cA new Labour Mayor hasn\u2019t moved the dial on the West of England being consistently short-changed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cOur region is a net contributor to the national purse, and yet our transport infrastructure is not receiving the funding that it so desperately needs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cIt is time that the West of England gets its fair share, so that real improvements to our region\u2019s transport problems can be made,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/2_Lib-Dem-Cllr-Andrew-Brown-chair-of-the-economy-committee.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Lib Dem Cllr Andrew Brown(Image: Alex Seabrook )<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Another Bristol Lib Dem councillor said talk of a mass transit system was something wearily familiar for people in the West of England. \u201cBristolians have heard the same promises of mass transit before, only to be left with no signs of progress,\u201d said Cllr Nicholas Coombes (Lib Dem, Westbury-on-Trym &amp; Henleaze).<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThe Regional Mayor needs to work with Bristol and the other councils to develop realistic plans that work for our area. Additional investment in public transport must also reduce current fares.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cUnder this Labour Government, people have already seen the \u00a32 bus fare cap increased. The cost-of-living crisis continues to put a huge strain on people\u2019s finances, and making public transport more affordable is a must for a more sustainable future,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">But that wasn\u2019t exactly a view shared by other Lib Dem politicians around the region, where there was no pointing at better deals in the north and the Midlands. The leader of the Lib Dem-run <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/south-gloucestershire-council\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">South Gloucestershire Council<\/a> said the investment was \u2018vital\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWe\u2019re very pleased to see this significant funding coming to the West of England that will help us move towards a fully integrated public transport system that works for residents and businesses,\u201d said Cllr Maggie Tyrrell (Lib Dem, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/thornbury\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Thornbury<\/a> ).<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cInvestment in the region\u2019s transport infrastructure is vital to help people keep moving around the area and we need better, more reliable bus services, more trains, and a mass transit system to offer more effective and sustainable travel choices,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">And the Lib Dem deputy leader in Bath &amp; North East Somerset was also pleased. \u201cThis investment marks a turning point for sustainable transport in our region,\u201d said Cllr Sarah Warren (Lib Dem, Bathavon North). \u201cIt is a huge opportunity to deliver a cleaner, greener and more connected future that our communities deserve.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/0_JS211974567.jpg\" alt=\"Councillor Sarah Warren, deputy leader, climate emergency and sustainable travel\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Councillor Sarah Warren, deputy leader, climate emergency and sustainable travel(Image: Bath and North East Somerset Council )<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cFrom progressing mass transit options to electrifying our bus fleet across Bath &amp; North East Somerset, this investment will help us tackle costly congestion, achieve our net zero targets, and make it easier for people to choose public transport, walking and cycling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cOn top of the work that\u2019s already being achieved in B&amp;NES, this is welcome news for our region. We look forward to working with our regional partners to deliver a transport system fit for the 21st century,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The Conservative candidate in last months\u2019 metro mayor elections, Steve Smith pointed out the announcement had a familiar ring to it. \u201cThis is great news,\u201d he posted on X. \u201cJust as it was when the Conservative Government announced it for the first time in October 2023.
