{"id":160340,"date":"2025-06-05T13:42:12","date_gmt":"2025-06-05T13:42:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/160340\/"},"modified":"2025-06-05T13:42:12","modified_gmt":"2025-06-05T13:42:12","slug":"weaker-activity-in-northern-irelands-new-car-market-continued-in-may-industry-data-shows-the-irish-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/160340\/","title":{"rendered":"Weaker activity in Northern Ireland\u2019s new car market continued in May, industry data shows \u2013 The Irish News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Northern Ireland\u2019s new car dealers recorded another weak month in May, the latest industry data suggests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Just 3,265 new cars were registered in the north last month, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">That was 16.5% (643 cars) down on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/business\/norths-motor-retailers-lost-some-momentum-in-may-industry-data-shows-NLNF76KINJGMHKXCLPU535C2EY\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/business\/norths-motor-retailers-lost-some-momentum-in-may-industry-data-shows-NLNF76KINJGMHKXCLPU535C2EY\/\">the same month last year, when 3,908 new cars were recorded<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">It came during a month when the wider UK-market returned to growth.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/business\/forestside-owners-secure-planning-approval-to-expand-south-belfast-shopping-centre-VL6NEEANFZDGTH7MVFA3HA6XJM\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Forestside owners secure planning approval to expand south Belfast shopping centre\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/1749130931_668_JYMCB5YZCRCRXKNQCWGYIJOQSE.JPG\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/business\/new-funding-secured-to-progress-new-lagan-swing-bridge-linking-sailortown-to-belfasts-titanic-quarter-HMTQXCVUSVAQHEJ6JO2TPRPUZU\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"New funding secured to progress Lagan swing bridge linking Sailortown to Belfast&#x2019;s Titanic Quarter\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/EDXAYD26HZHBVP2G3ZO5L4ZLLE.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The 149,690 new cars registered in May was almost 3% up on May 2024.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Nissan Qashqai\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/V2G2DPDNZFDFTFD5AKCHTBDESE.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"533\"\/>The Nissan Qashqai was the joint-best-selling new car in the north last month. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Overall, the 20,877 new cars registered in Northern Ireland in the first five months of 2025 was 7% down on the same period last year, the equivalent of 1,596 fewer sales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The difference is even more stark when compared to sales activity prior to the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">A total of 25,667 new motors rolled out of garages in the first five months of 2019, almost 5,000 more than this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Nissan Qashqai and the Peugeot 2008 were top of the table May\u2019s best-sellers in the north, with 93 models registered in both cases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">They came in ahead of the Nissan Juke (81), Ford Puma (75), Kia Sportage (73) and Volkswagen T-Roc (73).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Northern Ireland\u2019s new car dealers recorded another weak month in May, the latest industry data suggests.
